Roach is going to have a difficult time on May 2nd with Mayweather, says Beristain

Freddie Roach(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Chris Williams: Widely known trainer Nacho Beristain thinks that Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is going to have a lot of problems coming up with ideas for the 36-year-old Filipino star to deal with the different things that Mayweather will be doing in the ring on May 2nd in their mega-fight in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand.

Beristain sees Mayweather’s ability to move, and his overall talent as being a problem for Roach to come up with something to negate what he’s doing in the ring. Berisain says it doesn’t matter that Pacquiao is a southpaw, because Mayweather will be able to handle that without any problems.

“I think for Roach, he’s going to have the most difficult job on that night, because Mayweather, when he likes to move, the way he fights, it’s going to be hard for him to see it coming,” Beristain said via Fighthype.com. “Mayweather is a complete fighter. Pacquiao being left handed doesn’t matter.”

Beristain did say that he thinks Pacquiao can give Mayweather some problems if he puts a lot of pressure on him in this fight, but he thinks Mayweather’s movement will give Pacquiao and Roach big time problems in this fight.

Beristain says he is personally not a fan of Mayweather’s fighting style. He didn’t say why he wasn’t a fan, but it likely has to do with Mayweather not being a stationary enough fighter for his taste. Beristain, like Roach, seems to prefer brawling type fights.

Beristain’s No.1 fighter Juan Manuel Marquez has always done well against brawler types like Pacquiao, and many boxing fans believe that Marquez defeated Pacquiao all four times he fought him. Marquez was easily beaten by Mayweather in their fight six years ago in 2009.

It is going to be a very, very difficult fight for Roach and Pacquiao. All of Roach’s ideas center on his fighters putting pressure on their opponents, and trying to overwhelm them with punches. This kind of thing works against guys that can’t move at all or who only move in one direction in going forward all the time.

Roach isn’t going to be able to come up with anything for Pacquiao to do other than to try and move quickly to cut off the ring and force Mayweather to fight it out with him. The problem is that if Pacquiao fights like that, he’s going to get hit a lot by Mayweather, and likely get picked apart in a one-sided fight.

You don’t bum rush a fighter like Pacquiao, and that’s obviously what Pacquiao will be doing on May 2nd. Pacquiao may move his head from side to side, but he doesn’t move it enough and he doesn’t move it quickly enough for him to avoid getting hit by a guy like Mayweather. With Pacquiao having limited reach and being a head hunter, he’s going to be hitting air all night long.

It’s going to take a better plan for Pacquiao to win than him simply pressuring Mayweather all night long like Beristain says. That seems like a plan destined to fail. We saw how badly Marquez failed in his fight against Mayweather in 2009, and I think Pacquiao is going to likely wind up as another Marquez in his fight against Mayweather.
