Roach: I want Pacquiao meaner and more aggressive against Mayweather

Freddie Roach(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Chris Williams: The mastermind behind Manny Pacquiao, trainer Freddie Roach, wants Pacquiao to be seeing red when he gets inside the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr in their scheduled match-up on 5/2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach thinks that Pacquiao needs to be mean against Mayweather for him to win, and he wants him to be more aggressive.

The last time Roach was spouting off about wanting Pacquiao to fight in a more aggressive manner was when Pacquiao was knocked out in the 6th round by Juan Manuel Marquez in their fight in 2012. Roach kept saying over and over again that he wanted Pacquiao to fight aggressively like he used to do when he was in his mid-20s.

Roach’s constant harping on Pacquiao seemed to have gotten to the Filipino fighter, because he came out really aggressive and ended up walking into a big right hand from Marquez and got knocked out.

“I want to get him meaner and more aggressive because he’s going to need it in this fight,” Roach said via nymag.com.

There it is with Roach thinking that Pacquiao can win while fighting angry. The problem with fighting angry is that it’s going to lead to Pacquiao fighting even sloppier than he normally does, and that’s not a good thing.

If this were Brandon Rios or Chris Algieri Pacquiao was fighting, then it wouldn’t matter if Pacquiao came out there fighting like he was hopping mad on May 2nd. Those guys would be beaten by Pacquiao no matter what state of mind he was in.

Pacquiao could come out there crying his eyes out and half blind with tears, and he’d still beat them. But this is Mayweather that Pacquiao will be fighting on 5/2, and he’s going to give Pacquiao a savage beating if he’s not thinking clearly with a calm head. Roach (40-13, 15 KOs) wasn’t what you would call a really good fighter during his own boxing career.

Maybe he’s the type that needed to fight in a state of anger in order for him to have success, but the fact that he lost so many times gives you a good indication that he wasn’t doing something right. If Roach wants Pacquiao to get mean in the ring with Mayweather, I can’t see anything good coming of it. That kind of thing reminds me of how Roach was trying to whip Pacquiao into a frenzy before his last fight against Marquez, and we saw what the outcome was there.

Pacquiao needs someone calm, cool and collective in his corner giving him guidance. I’m not sure that Roach is that guy. It’s too bad Pacquiao won’t have another guy training him who can give him some more sensible advice for the Mayweather fight, because he’s never going to beat Mayweather if he lets Roach whip into a frenzy. That’s a good way of getting Pacquiao knocked out again if you ask me.

Pacquiao is already about as aggressive as he can be, and I don’t think he needs any encouragement on that side. Frankly, Pacquiao would be better off if he had a trainer that was telling him to be careful, fight smart, and not attack like a wild man.
