Pacquiao doesn’t like Mayweather, says Roach

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao doesn’t like Floyd Mayweather Jr, according to his trainer Freddie Roach. It’s unclear why Pacquiao doesn’t like Mayweather, because he seems to say nothing but good stuff about Pacquiao when interviewed.

Instead of taking shots at the 36-year-old Filipino, Mayweather builds him up in the media by saying he’s a tremendous fighter.

I don’t think it’s helpful for Pacquiao to dislike Mayweather, because it could cause Pacquiao to fight in a wild and out of control manner when the two of them get together to fight on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In looking at Pacquiao’s training video, he’s throwing punches with a lot of aggression like someone who has anger inside. Instead of being happy that he was finally thrown a bone by Mayweather by him agreeing to fight him, Pacquiao looks almost angry while training.

“I’ve never seen him dislike an opponent in my life, but you know what, he doesn’t like this guy,” Roach said via The Jim Rome Show as quoted by Badlefthook.com. “He won’t say anything bad about him, but he won’t say anything good about him either. I think this is a perfect opponent.”

So, according to Roach, Mayweather is the perfect opponent because Pacquiao doesn’t like him? That doesn’t make any sense. You’re supposed to be detached when you fight, not seething with anger or dislike. If Pacquiao comes out in the ring hopping mad on May 2nd, he’s going to get hit a lot by Mayweather and wind up getting a boxing lesson. Pacquiao should be staying emotionally detached for the fight. If Pacquiao fights with anger on May 2nd, he’ going to walk into a lot of shots from Mayweather, and likely take a one-sided decision loss, or worse, wind up getting knocked out.

You can only guess why Pacquiao would have dislike for Mayweather. It could be that Pacquiao dislikes Mayweather because of his perfect 47-0 ring record, or it could be that Pacquiao dislikes Mayweather because he makes so much money each time he fights.

While Mayweather is still bringing in excellent pay-per-view numbers, Pacquiao has seen his PPV numbers drop in his recent fights against Brandon Rios, Chris Algieri and Tim Bradley.

A defeat at the hands of Mayweather on May 2nd will likely drive Pacquiao’s future pay-per-view numbers even further down. Of course, it’s possible that Pacquiao could see his pay-per-view numbers go upwards even if he gets badly beaten by Mayweather, but I tend to think they’ll be shooting downwards rather than upwards.

Pacquiao will have been exposed at that point, and I don’t see him becoming more popular from that experience.

“Everything has to be his [Mayweather’s] way. He has a comfort zone, like we couldn’t say anything about the fight until he announced it,” Roach said. “He’s very, very insecure. He’s not that good a guy, I mean he’s not a good guy, he’s not a good person, he’s not a good role model…I think he’s a bad role model for the kids and so forth…and Manny is a perfect role model.”

Roach is making a judgment of Mayweather based on his own interpretations, but that’s not how other people see Mayweather. He’s well respected in the boxing world, and he’s looked up to by a lot of boxing fans. He motivates people to want to be like him by modeling behavior. He’s kind during press conferences, soft spoken, and he lives a magnificent lifestyle. He’s got beautiful houses, cars, clothes, jewelry, and women. When people see Mayweather, they want to live like him because he’s got such a fantastic life. I don’t know how you can’t see Mayweather as a great role model
