floyd8282828By Babatis Banda: On May 2, we will witness two of the greatest fighters of this generation meet in the ring to settle long standing issues, most of which have actually become very personal. May 2 will also produce an undisputed best fighter of this generation. I see it not only as a battle of supremacy, but of attrition and of vindication.

Manny Pacquiao will not only want to win this fight, but to really hurt Mayweather. I feel Pacquiao would really love to grind Mayweather, slowly and nicely to submission. I know and am very aware that Pacquiao is very capable of this. Pacquiao can be very physical, very tough and very aggressive. He can be blazing and devastating, no wonder many of his faithful supporters are predicting a knock-out win against Mayweather. Pacquiao is a perfect gladiator in every sense of it and this makes it a battle of attrition.

On the other hand, Mayweather is all sublime. He is not devastating and neither is he physical, but has enough assets to upset the physical and the devastating. Mayweather all his career has had to beat aggressive and knock-out artists and yet, he has always made it look simple until recently when he seemed to struggle a little with Maidana, the ragged Argentinian. All said and done, Floyd is on top of the pack for a good reason and he will want to vindicate this position.

We have heard all the predictions of how Pacquiao wants to punish Mayweather. We have heard all about how Mayweather will be stopped within 12 rounds. Though anything is possible in combat sport, we know how unlikely this will be for one simple reason. For Pacquiao to be effective with his fighting style, he needs a cooperating partner. He needs a willing dancing partner. Floyd will not exchange with Pacquiao, he will not stay in the pocket. Floyd will use his skill to frustrate and smoothen Pacquiao for the length of the night. We have seen Pacquiao struggle with boxers before and Floyd is the best there is. He will keep him at bay.

May the 2nd I predict that Mayweather will cement his legacy as an all-time great. Floyd does not need to do anything extra-ordinary on the night. The usual will suffice and that is to box, good movement and not get hit. Pacquiao is the one that needs to bring out something extra-ordinary to prevail on the night, for example he needs to cut and control Mayweather’s movement. There is this thing of awkward angles and all. Forget about awkward angles with Mayweather, he can easily use that against Pacquiao i.e., catch him out of position. The betting odds are certainly influenced and reflective of these factors. My bet is Mayweather on points and it will be a clear win.
