Malignaggi: Mayweather has too many weapons for Pacquiao

floyd33By Chris Williams: WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) is too limited to beat WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs), and he lacks the proper weaponry, says Showtime commentator Paulie Malignaggi.

Pacquiao will have problems with Mayweather’s body attack in their fight on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Malignaggi said.

As for Pacquiao’s ability to attack from angles and move side to side, Malignaggi doesn’t see it. Malignaggi thinks Mayweather will easily walk Pacquiao down without worry in this fight and nullify any things that Pacquiao can do.

“On May 3rrd, everyone will say I’m right; Mayweather easily,” Malignaggi said to esnewsreporting.com. “He’s got too many weapons for Pacquiao. Pacquiao isn’t diversified enough. They can hate me all they want, but on May 3rd, they’re going to say ‘the guy was right.’ What angles are we talking about? Is he [Pacquiao] jumping all around like a grasshopper? What angles? I don’t understand the angles. Why am I not seeing those angles? If someone just walks him [Pacquiao] down, where are the angles? If he [Mayweather] walks him down and beats him to the body; Floyd has a much underrated body attack. When he gets aggressive against southpaws; that’s the key right there. He’s going to be very aggressive against that body, and he’s going to start hurting Pacquiao late in the fight,” Malignaggi said.

What Malignaggi didn’t say is that Pacquiao really doesn’t use angles or side to side movement any more. He pretty much stopped using angles back in 2009 when he fought Miguel Cotto. Since that time, Pacquiao is now just a straight ahead type of a fighter who can only backwards and forwards.

The side to side and the angles are a part of the past for the 36-year-old Pacquiao. Pacquiao’s whole game is to come forward, throw some combinations, and then retreat backwards to the safety of the outside. He’s too heavy-legged at this point in his career to use the side to side movement of his youth.

I do see Mayweather walking Pacquiao down and hammering him to the body with hard shots. Pacquiao has problems taking body shots, as we saw in his knockout loss in the past to Rustico Torrecampo in a 3rd round stoppage in 1996.

We also saw Pacquiao get hurt by a body shot from Antonio Margarito. If Mayweather goes to the body against Pacquiao on 5/2, we could see the same results with Pacquiao hitting the canvas.

Mayweather will have to walk Pacquiao down just like Torrecamp and Margarito did, and focus on nailing him with body shot after body shot until he drops to the canvas for the 10 count.

Pacquiao needs to change his entire offense for him to have a chance of beating Mayweather by showing something that he’s never seen before, because right now Pacquiao is too predictable in the thing he does.

Pacquiao needs to come up with some new kind of attack, because he’s going to get worked over by Mayweather if he comes at him like he did in his past few fights against Chris Algieri, Tim Bradley and Brandon Rios.
