By Chris Williams: Former two division world champion Zab Judah was hopping mad at Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach because of a recent comment that Roach had made about Judah. When Roach was told that Mayweather had reportedly been getting the better of Judah in one of his sparring sessions, Roach made light of it, saying that Judah was an old fighter and that it didn’t matter.

“Who cares if Floyd knocks out an old man like Zab Judah,” Roach said via Facebook.

This didn’t go well with Judah. After hearing the comment from the 55-year-old Roach, Judah tore into the trainer, pointing out that he was never a good fighter during his time as a pro, and that he didn’t rate to be a Hall of Fame trainer. Judah says that many of the top fighters that Roach trained were guys that had already made it big beforehand.

In other words, Roach didn’t train the fighters from the beginning of their careers and work them up to the point where they became champions. Judah points out that Roach-trained fighters like Amir Khan, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto were all good fighters before Roach ever started training them.

“He’s [Roach] gone on record saying Zab’s old, Zab’s a bum, but I’m not the one fighting Manny Pacquiao,” Judah said via Dontae’s Boxing Nation. “I’m not even in this fight. The guy he should be worried about is Mayweather. I feel for you and everything you have to go through, but that’s no excuse for you to have Tourette Syndrome of the mouth. It’s not right. Let’s look at what he did as a fighter. He did nothing. You want to talk about bums? You could have put Freddie on a chain in the boxing ring, because he was nothing but a heavy bag. You didn’t beat anybody and you didn’t do anything as a prizefighter. I’m a five time champion of the world. I never in my life ever said anything negative towards you, so I really don’t know why he’s opening up his mouth talking about me.”

As a fighter, Roach had a record of 40-13, 15 KOs). That’s a journeyman level record. He lost five of his last six fights of his career, which ended in 1986. Roach never fought for a major world title during his pro career.

Judah has always been excellent fighter with amazing hand speed. During his career he’s beaten quality fighters like Cory Spinks, Lucas Matthysse, Jose Armando Santa Cruz, Vernon Paris, Kaizer Mabuza, and Junior Witter to name just some of the guys. Judah has lost some fights during his career, but many of those fights came when he was fighting outside of his natural weight class. Had Judah stayed at 140 his entire career instead of moving up to 147, he’d have accomplished a lot more. Still, Judah made a lot of money in moving up to welterweight and fighting guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Joshua Clottey, Carlos Baldomir, Spinks and Miguel Cotto.

“You’re known as a Hall of Fame trainer, but I beg to differ,” Judah said. “A Hall of Fame trainer should be able to take someone from scratch and turn him into a world champion. You’ve never done that. You got guys already made…Cotto, Pacquiao, Khan…everybody. So if you really want to get technical about this, I don’t see you as a Hall of Fame trainer. How? Roger Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather Sr., my father, Angel Garcia…those guys deserve more recognition, because they’ve all taken fighters from scratch and turned them into world champions. How me one guy Freddie has done that with? Who?”

There’s no question that Roach got Cotto, Pacquiao and Khan after those fighters had started out with other guys. They’d already found success with other trainers, and done quite well. Roach obviously has gotten a lot of credit for those fighters doing well with him, but you can see that those fighters did just as well when they were trained by other guys. Look at Khan. He’s a better fighter now in being trained by Virgil Hunter than he was when Roach was training him.
