Hearn: Froch-Golovkin will be happening at the end of the year

1-01By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, says that a fight between Froch and WBA 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) will be taking place at the end of this year. Hearn sees it as a “high-risk” fight for Froch, but he also thinks it’s an interesting match-up due to the style match-up with two sluggers going at it.

The unfortunate thing about the Froch-Golovkin fight is that by the time it takes place, Froch may no longer have his WBA title if he faces WBA Super World super middleweight champion Andre Ward, because this is a guy that will likely whip Froch by a lopsided decision.

If Froch chooses not to take that fight, then he’ll be stripped of his title by the WBA for failing to face Ward.

“It is a high-risk fight [Froch-Golovkin], then I believe you will see that happening the end of the year, early next year. I am confident Carl Froch will fight him,” Hearn said via Skysports.com. “When you talk about Golovkin, Carl Froch has the curiosity to fight Golovkin because no-one knows how good he really is. We know he’s very good but is he exceptional? Can he handle it at 168lbs?”

If Froch chooses to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr next rather than Ward or Golovkin, then there’s also a possibility that Froch could lose that fight as well if Chavez Jr comes into the fight in tip top shape.

It’s painfully obvious that Froch has no inside game whatsoever, and if his idea of trying to beat Chavez Jr is to nail him with rabbit shots on the inside, then I don’t see that working out too well for the 37-year-old Froch. He also can’t try and bang Chavez Jr out of there at long range by throwing pot shots, because Chavez Jr will take whatever Froch throws at him and then return fire with his own big shots.

“Can he handle it when he’s fighting someone [Golovkin] who’s got a granite chin landing shots back, and is much bigger? So that fascinates Carl, and he wants to find out the answer but the only way to find that out is in the ring,” Hearn said. `
Froch has more to fear than facing someone with a granite chin who can take his shots. Froch has to fear the constant incoming blasts from Golovkin to the head and body of Froch. I mean, we just saw Britain’s Martin Murray get laid to waste in getting knocked down three times in the process of being stopped in the 11th round last month.

The thing is Murray is known for having a steel chin just like Froch, yet he was hitting the deck 24/7 over and over again from Golovkin’s power shots. And this was with Murray running and holding from the 1st round until the bitter end in the 11th. Froch isn’t known for being a runner, so this could be a very easy fight for Golovkin if he gets in the ring with him. That’s why I have a feeling that Hearn is going to drag his feet about putting together a fight between his money man Froch and Golovkin. If Golovkin was able to destroy Murray with his steel chin, then I can see Golovkin doing the same thing with Froch in reducing him to a pile of rubble well before the 7th round. The only reason Murray lasted to the 11th was because of all the running he was doing. Froch won’t run, and that’s why I see him getting blasted out quickly by Golovkin.

Hearn has talked about wanting Golovkin to become better known in the United States before he makes the fight between him and Froch. I can understand that excuse, but it doesn’t hold water given that Froch is been talking about wanting to retire soon. I mean, why is Hearn wasting time saying that he wants to wait until Golovkin gets popular enough to put in with Froch when Froch is yapping about wanting to retire. Under normal circumstances what Hearn is saying would make a lot of sense if Froch were to be sticking around for another two to three years, but given that Froch is talking about retiring from boxing, it means that Hearn needs to put him in with Froch pronto before he hangs up the old gloves.
