Gennady Golovkin: The Lack of Right Approach

1-IMG_7049By Srikant Rawat: There is no one as exciting as Gennady Golovkin in boxing today. He is extremely aggressive. He has mastered the lost art of shifting, which provides him with devastating power in both the hands; allows him to be constantly in a position to land a knockout punch, and the most important thing, he gets hit and isn’t afraid to get into exchanges.

Golovkin’s fights with Gabriel Rosado and Martin Murray saw him taking some hard shots, which he shrugged off, and focused only on his offense. Not many people seem to give him credit for his chin. He doesn’t seem to get hurt. But it’s not because he doesn’t get hit; he gets hit, he walks through the punches, and constantly pressurizes.

Most of his opponents are just out of breath and discouraged when they lose. Inside the ring, he does everything right, outside of it could be a different story altogether. How?

He has been chasing Miguel Cotto since a long time now. It’s a fight that shouldn’t happen. Cotto is too small for 160 pounds. We all know how he got it by beating an old and past-his-prime Martinez. Cotto vs Golovkin will be a slaughter.

It doesn’t make sense, and I appreciate Cotto for not taking the fight quite justifiably. Then there is Canelo Alvarez, who recently said he would stay at 154 pounds for a few more years. Then recently Gennady said he would like to fight Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather winner. Seriously? Can you imagine Gennady and Pacauiao in the same ring? The very thought is ridiculous.

Now, let’s imagine 168 pounds, where there is Andre Ward, who has never been beaten, and has never looked close to being beaten, just in the way Gennady has never looked close to being beaten. Wouldn’t it be a fight, if not as big as Pacquiao vs Mayweather, which will be big in terms of leaving a legacy.

Every boxing fan, the purist, will pay to see that fight. There is Carl Froch, with the iron chin that he has, with a portfolio of mind boggling tough fights, who could again be a great option. George Groves and Arthur Abraham could be Gennady’s tune up fights at 168 pounds. And Chavez Jr. Chavez Jr would be a lucrative fight. Chavez Jr has clearly expressed his desire to fight Gennady.

The best move for Gennady is to move up in weight and fight these guys, who wouldn’t run around like most of his opponents do, and would fight him back. That’s a weight class that would test Gennady. Not 154 pounds. I think he should fight Andy Lee at 160 pounds if that fight could be made, and immediately move up in weight.

Gennady Golovkin would do amazingly well for his brand equity in that weight if he is as devastating as he is at 160 pounds instead of chasing Cotto and Mayweather; who will logically and rightfully not fight him.
