Froch to fight in September, Chavez Jr, Ward, Golovkin and DeGale possibilities

froch11By Scott Gilfoid: After sitting out of action for a year after his win over fellow Brit George Groves last year in May, WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) plans on returning to the ring in September of this year, possibly against Andre Ward, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr or James DeGale.

The Chavez Jr fight is the one that Froch wants, even though Chavez Jr has done zero with his career ever since his 7th round stoppage win over Andy Lee in June of 2012. We’re talking about a three year rut for Chavez Jr, and Froch wants to fight him. That’s very interesting and very telling.

WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is also a possibility for Froch, but he appears to be trailing the other guys by a wide margin in terms of the September fight. You would have to say that Chavez Jr has the best chance of getting the Froch fight, as long as he wins his April 18th fight against Andrzej Fonfara, and if he doesn’t negotiate too tough with Froch.

“I think he will fight in September, but if it’s not the right fight and not the right deal, then he definitely won’t fight again,” Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn said via the Mirror.co.uk. “We’ve got talks with Ward ongoing, but the Chavez fight is still the one he wants. He’s mentioned DeGale and he’s said to me that if DeGale can do the business out there against Andre Dirrell, and that would be a big fight.”

I think you can pretty much rule out DeGale for the Froch fight in September, and likely forever, because many boxing fans expect DeGale to get really beaten up and dominated in his next fight against Andre Dirrell on May 23rd at the Agganis Arena, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

A one-sided loss for DeGale would put him in a situation where it would likely take him two to three years to come back from that defeat. By then, Froch will have likely retired from the sport, and that means no Froch vs. DeGale fight.

Hearn said “I quite like the Ward fight and I also like the Golovkin fight because how much kudos do you get for fighting Golovkin?”

Hearn is right about Froch getting a lot of credit if he were to step up to the plate and fight Golovkin. Even if Froch got knocked cold by Golovkin, boxing fans would still give Froch a ton of credit for having taken the fight. But I just don’t know that Froch is going to take it. If he chooses to keep bypassing the fight, then I think it’s safe to say that they’ll never be a Froch-Golovkin fight.

What’s interesting is that boxing fans would likely give Froch way more credit if he were to face Golovkin than if he were to take on Chavez Jr, and yet Froch appears to be mainly interested in the Chavez Jr fight. It’s very confusing and hard to understand.

At least if Froch gets beaten by Golovkin, he’ll have a good excuse to give to boxing fans by saying he got beaten by one of the best fighters in the sport. If Froch gets beaten by Chavez Jr, he’s going to be left with nothing to say. He can’t say that Chavez Jr is one of the best, because he’d likely be easy whipped by Andre Dirrell, Andre Ward, Anthony Dirrell and Golovkin.

Froch’s injured elbow is reportedly healed now, and he’s ready to start training again once he finds out who his next opponent will be. With April about to start, Froch has five months before his next fight in September. That means Hearn is going to need to find Froch’s next opponent pronto if he wants to give him enough time to train for the fight, and to market it to the boxing public.
