Broner will defeat Khan

khan67777By Hector Gonzalez: I’m not the biggest Adrien Broner fan! To be fair I’m not the biggest Amir Khan fan either, but as rumors are beginning to surface that they might be fighting one another in the near future and boxing fans are beginning to weigh in their opinions on who will beat who, I think that many Khan supporters are missing the bigger picture. Yes Amir Khan looked good in beating Devon Alexander but let’s not jump to conclusions.

Yes, Amir Khan looked great against Devon Alexander, he looked like an extremely polished boxer. He looked like the type of fighter that could soon take the welterweight division by storm. I would be a believer except for one thing. I’ve heard this story from Khan before, as a matter of fact I’ve heard it multiple times.

Alexander vs Khan was a one man show where Khan demonstrated slickness, speed and accurate combinations. Well, the same was said 5 years ago when Khan faced Paulie Malignaggi. In fact it was a very similar story. Khan was too much for Malignaggi, too fast for the Magic Man. There are even more similarities, Malignaggi like Alexander are not known for being power punchers.

We heard the same story again against Zab Judah, again another slick fighter known for being fast but not a pressure fight. After the Zab Juadah fight the same type of hype revolved around Amir Khan. He KO’d Zab Judah in the same fashion that he dismantled Paulie Malignaggi, Amir Khan was surely the next big thing.

What followed was a loss to Lamont Peterson and a KO loss to Danny Garcia…. I have a feeling that I already know how Khan supporters are going to respond after reading this article, they will respond as follows. 1. Lamont Peterson was on PED’s when he fought Khan, 2.) Amir Khan is much different fighter now that he is with Virgil Hunter.

I will debunk those two arguments.

1.) Lamont Peterson fought Khan in phone booth style, sure Peterson’s use of PED’s enhance his ability however, fighting in phone booth style means that if Khan is as slick as his fans think is he he should have been able to stick in move, stick and move, jab, jab in and out, he however was not able to do that. There is a notable pattern with Khan, he looks really good for the first three rounds of any fight against pressure fighters. After the third round, the pressure fighter has closed the distance and eventually starts timing Khan. It happened with Peterson, Maidana, and Garcia. It will happen against Broner. Khan does not generate the power to keep pressure fighters off of him.

2.) It’s hard to say what type of improvements Amir Khan has made with Virgil Hunter because in order to test the waters he needs to fight pressure fighters with strong hands. Those are the fighters who have giving him trouble, not technicians. We all know that Khan would look good against technicians but will he look good against pressure fighters. From what I’ve seen there is one factor above all others that make Khan susceptible to a strong pressure fighter. He is still getting hit with the right hand. Even in Khan’s last fight against Devon Alexander you clearly hear now Showtime commentator Paulie Malignaggi say, Alexander is landing the right hand but he does not have enough power to be effective. In other words what good is it that Khan looked good for so many rounds when his kryptonite, the right hand is still landing on him. The right hand landed by both Collazo and by Alexander.

Again Khan looked good against Alexander.. He also looked really good against Malignaggi as well as Judah, But he also looked poorly against Danny Garcia. Just remember, Adrien Broner is not Devon Alexander, Broner has some serious power.
