Broner: Hopefully we [Khan] fight on June 6th at 147

broner123By Scott Gilfoid: Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) says he wants to fight Amier Khan (30-1, 19 KOs) on June 6th in a fight that would take place at 147 pounds if Khan agrees to the fight.

The two of them had recently talked about wanting to face each other. It was thought that Broner was just talking to get attention from boxing fans and from writers in the sport. However, it now looks like Broner was dead serious when he called Khan out, because he’s saying he hopes Khan will face him in three months from now, presumably in Broner’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

“Face-timed Amir ‘King’ Khan yesterday; hopefully we get this fight on for #June 6th #147 #anybodycangetit #AboutBillions,”.

Broner, 25, is tentatively scheduled to fight on June 20th in Cincinnati. Broner is looking for a big name to fight, and Khan is the closest thing that comes to fitting that description.

In Broner’s last fight, he easily defeated the big hitting John Molina by an impressive 12 round unanimous decision. Broner both slugged and boxed during the fight, and was able to totally dominate a very good fighter. It was a big improvement for Broner from his last fight against Emmanuel Taylor.

Khan could really use the fight against Broner, because Khan still doesn’t have an opponent for his next fight. He was ignored by boxing’s two biggest stars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao after he tried hard to get fights against them.

Khan was waiting around for a long time hoping that he’d be able to slide in and get one of them if they failed to negotiate a fight between themselves, but unfortunately for Khan they were able to setup a fight for May 2nd. That leaves Khan in the cold, needing an opponent. He’s recently taken to calling out WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who also hasn’t shown any interest in fighting Khan.

Broner would be a really dangerous fight for Khan because of his power, accurate punching and his excellent defense. I could see Khan losing that fight by knockout if it goes down. Khan says he wants the fight but I’m not so certain that he really wants that fight due to the danger.

If Khan loses to Broner, then he can pretty much permanently forget about getting either Mayweather or Pacquiao to fight him. But at the same time unless Khan beats Broner or someone as well-known as him, I don’t see him getting a fight against the Mayweathers or Pacquiaos.
