By Wilmar Patino (Boxing’s Finest): From Willie Pep to the defensive today I would like to pose the question to my fellow readers of who is the most entertaining defensive fighter you have had the privilege to witness? Just to be clear this is not an article about who has the best defense but whose defense was the most entertaining to watch?

Willie Pep is most notably known for a round without throwing a single Punch. Nicolino Locche had some of the greatest head movement witnessed to date. A Mike Tyson can be added to that mix but he was more of an aggressive counter puncher. As seen in the video posted along with the article there have been many fighters with the mastery of defense but many are not viewed by the public as very entertaining.

Wilfred Benitez was great at dodging punches and could leave you in awe. James Toney was a master at perfecting the shoulder roll, and today we have fighters such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Andre Ward, Guillermo Rigondeaux to name a few. With honorable mentions to Erislandy Lara, Vasyl Lomachenko, Terrence Crawford and Roman Gonzalez. Yet many fans are not too fond of the fast paced action and chess matches that take in place in the ring when said fighters step in it.

Pernell Whitaker was a great defensive wizard who would dodge, duck, and dance his way around the ring with beautiful footwork. It was an awesome craft he perfected and bedazzled the fans with at times. There are so many fighters to name it would take an eternity to mention all of them. Jersey Joe Walcott, Muhammad Ali etc. So Now that you get the gist of what I’m saying who entertained you the most? Beyond just an appreciation of their craft who had you waiting to see more?

Defense is not a topic we cover much in the sport of Boxing but it is overdue. With great fighters like Rigondeaux having to resort to fighting in Japan without the backing of major networks it would be nice to see that mentality of the networks and fans change for once. I’m sure we can all appreciate what a defensive master does and how well they signify the essence of the sweet science.

So engage in the conversation and let’s start the debate. Who was or is the most entertaining defensive fighter?
