Tyson Fury: If Wilder keeps winning, we’ll fight sometime

fury5667By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten #1 WBO heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (23-0, 17 KOs) isn’t in a hurry to face WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) in a fight despite the fact that Fury isn’t likely to get a title shot against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Fury is willing to wait on the Wladimir fight because he sees it as a bigger deal to face Wladimir, who is seen as the top fighter in the heavyweight division, rather than the 6’7” Wilder.

“If he [Wilder] keeps winning like he is, it’ll happen sometime. The more realistic fight is the WBO title, which is Wladimir Klitschko. I’m going to keep busy anyway. If I don’t get a world title fight, I’d like to fight four times this year,” Fury said via IFL TV.

This “someday” thing that Fury is talking about before he’ll face Wilder could prove to be a ‘never’ thing if Fury winds up facing Wladimir first and getting knocked out. I mean, there’s no real upside to Wilder facing Fury after he gets blasted out.

It’s going to take Fury two to three years to build himself back up after he gets blasted out by Wladimir, and even then the likely only way that Fury can accomplish that is by steering clear of dangerous guys like Bryant Jennings, Carlos Takam, Alexander Povetkin and Kubrat Pulev.

I can’t see Fury beating any of those guys. He’s going to need to take it easy with softer opposition like the ones he’s build his record on because it would be too dangerous for him to rebuild against a good fighter.

If Fury has his head on straight, he’ll take the Wilder fight now because it might take too many years for him to get back to where he is now. With fighters like Anthony Joshua moving up the ranks, Fury’s about to be replaced in the UK as the best domestic level fighter in the country.

That’s why Fury needs to take the Wilder payday fight while it’s still there, because the money that Fury gets for fighting Wladimir likely won’t be as good as the cash he can get for a Wilder fight.

Wilder can help out with the promotional side of the Fury-Wilder fight to make it a huge event. With Wladimir, I can’t see him doing anything more than showing up for press conferences and giving an occasional interview here and there.

Fury will be fighting this month on February 28th against Christian Hammer (17-3, 10 KOs) at the O2 Arena in the United Kingdom.
