Prediction: Mayweather to fight Cotto on May 2nd

floyd93By Nasir Jawaid: Floyd Mayweather Jr has recently taken to his Instagram and Twitter to show how determined he is to make boxing’s biggest fight. A short video of the meeting that took place between Floyd and Manny Pacquiao is now circulating the web.

Mayweather is stating they have to give boxing its biggest fight (referring to himself and Pacquiao). However, I see this as a massive smokescreen for Mayweather to announce a Miguel Cotto fight on May 2nd.

Cotto has been very quiet recently, and has for no apparent reason backed out of a fight negotiations with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which would have made him a huge amount of money. So why would you back out of a fight that can make you millions? Unless a better offer is made.

As now nothing has been confirmed but the news of Cotto suddenly backing out of the Canelo fight does make the mind wonder. At the same time Mayweather coming out to social media and releasing a 16 second snippet of the meeting between him and Pacquiao and captioning it “from the looks of this video , I’m telling Manny to give the fight.” This tells me Mayweather is a smart man he is covering himself from the backlash he will receive for not fighting Pacquiao.

HBO have already released a statement giving the fight a green light so the networks are on board. I don’t see a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao mega-fight being made for May 2nd. I can’t remember the last time Mayweather fought an opponent with fast hands or feet similar to the speed that Pacquiao possesses.

I see speed and combination punching being Mayweather’s downfall in this bout. Pacquiao possesses both these traits and avoiding Pacquiao means choosing from the likes of Cotto or Amir Khan. There’s no way a Khan fight is taking place, because he holds speed and combination punching like Pacquiao.

So who’s left for Mayweather to fight? Yes, Cotto who’s been very quiet. This fight will be sold as unfinished business between Mayweather and Cotto. On Cinco de Mayo on May 2nd, you’ll see Mayweather vs. Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in their joint broadcast fight on HBO and Showtime.
