Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Fireworks and illusions

by Yannis Mihanos: For the last 1.5 months there have been rumors of Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao coming close to agree for a fight on May 2nd that have grown out of proportion.

People from all around the world have been preparing to see the fight in any way possible. Bookies have begun accepting bet, and the expectation has grown even bigger the last few weeks.

Very recently team Pacquiao announced proudly that they have agreed to all terms and conditions for the fight and they also set a deadline until the 1st of February for Mayweather to agree. Now this deadline has passed without any effect whatsoever.

During all this time Team Mayweather never came forwards and neither made any official announcement about the fight negotiations. Last week, Mayweather tweeted from Jamaica where he was on holiday, appearing completely uninterested to make the fight.

It seems to me now that it was all fireworks and illusions with Mayweather. Floyd wants to stay unbeaten and reasonably healthy and to fight Pacquiao would have put him at risk on both areas.

Many express that the money as the deciding factor for this fight to take place one day, but in my mind and I think this isn’t a factor for either of these two fighters. Mayweather is already earning a lot of money from his businesses he’s been running in and out of the ring. Manny too is a multimillionaire in his native country Philippines and also a congressman.

There is no question that they both have enough money to live a long and abundant life.

For Manny the motive to fight Floyd is a bit different. He wants to fight Mayweather for the people and for the pride and to finally show who the best is.
Mayweather on the other hand prefers to stay on his throne without challenging Pacquiao.

A defeat from Pacquiao might derail him not only physically but also mentally.
There is nothing left for me to say that’s not already been said except the fact that this fight is not going to happen anytime soon in my view.

They now both seem to have understood that and have begun to search for new opponents.

It’s a disappointment for us the fans but it is what it is. There is nothing else to be said.

If the fight doesn’t happen then I think the fans will be cheated. There was a time in the past where a simple handshake over a table was enough to make the biggest fight happen. This time has now passed. Now it’s only fireworks and illusions.
