Mayweather: Pacquiao’s back is against the wall because he needs money

pacquiao44By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr believes that Manny Pacquiao had no other choice but to take a fight against him, because he feels that the 36-year-old Pacquiao is in need of money. Mayweather doesn’t say why Pacquiao needs the cash from a mega-fight between them on May 2nd. Mayweather gave Pacquiao a very generous 60-40 purse split of the loot, which gives Pacquiao a lot more money than the $40 million that Mayweather offered the Filipino star three years ago.

Some boxing fans think Pacquiao is badly in debt. Whether that’s true or not is unknown, as only Pacquiao and his management know his exact financial situation. If Pacquiao had to take the Mayweather fight in order to pay off debts of one kind of another, it’s good for Pacquiao that he had that option.

A lot of people that fall deeply in debt don’t have a big payday fight against Mayweather fall into their laps like Pacquiao did. This fight could give Pacquiao a payday of $80-100 million depending on how many pay-per-view buys it generates.

“I honestly believe at this particular time, even if Pacquiao didn’t want to fight, he has no choice because his back is against the wall,” Mayweather said via
Fighthype.com, “Because he needs the money, I don’t. Every property that I have from Miami to L.A. to Las Vegas, it’s paid for.”

The money that Pacquiao gets from this fight will likely be four to five times what he normally makes in his fights, and that’s obviously can’t hurt. Pacquiao can’t fight forever, and who knows how much longer he has before he retires or someone retires him after another knockout loss.

If Pacquiao’s career ends with him getting knocked out viciously again like he was in the Juan Manuel Marquez fight, he can at least have the huge payday from the Mayweather fight. Having a nice cash out fight against Mayweather would be a great sendoff for Pacquiao, because he presumably would never be in need of money for the rest of his life unless he gives all the loot away to friends, acquaintances for whatever else interests him.

Pacquiao will need to show more sides of his game than he’s done recently if he wants to beat Mayweather. Pacquiao will need to show more versatility to his game if he wants to be able to beat Mayweather.

Just coming forward and throwing a lot of fast shots might not be enough for Pacquiao in this fight. He’s going to need to show some boxing skills, and he’s going to need to show some defensive skills as well. Pacquiao has got to show more skills in this fight for him to have a good chance of winning.

Pacquiao can’t count on winning the fight if he comes running forward throwing the old double punch that he used to do in his fights. I’m afraid that Pacquiao is going to need to be a little more advanced than that if he wants to be able to contend against a boxing artist like Mayweather.

Mayweather’s natural size advantage is going to give him a plus in this fight that Pacquiao is going to need to try and overcome. Pacquiao says his fists will make up the difference for his lack of size. Mayweather will need to fight Pacquiao’s style of fighting for Pacquiao’s fists to lead him to victory.
