Mayweather-Pacquiao fight won’t be announced at Super Bowl, says source

floyd93By Chris Williams: Many boxing fans are hoping that the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight will be announced during today’s Super Bowl game between the Seattle Seahawks and then New England Patriots, but that might not happen. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, his source is saying that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight won’t be announced.

Of course, there’s really no way of telling whether this source knows what he or she is talking about, because we saw recently TMZ Sport get pie in their faces when their source gave out information about the fight being a done deal when it clearly wasn’t.

“Contrary to growing urban legend, several sources involved in #MayweatherPacquiao talks say there’s no Super Bowl announcement. Never was,” Rafael said on his twitter.

Let’s just hope that Rafael is wrong, because today’s Super Bowl game would be the perfect time for the Mayweather-Pacquiao mega-fight to be announced. If they can announce it today before halftime, they would be able to take advantage of the millions that are watching the fight.

It’s best that the fight be announced before halftime, because that’s when NFL fans tend to walk away from their television sets to get refreshments and food. Also, if the game turns out to be a one-sided mismatch, then a lot of fans give up on the games and turn the channel rather than subject themselves to seeing a boring blowout.

That’s why they’ve got to announce the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight during the first two quarters of the game in order to reach the biggest viewing audience.

”Those sources says there’s still a lot to do on potential Mayweather-Pacquiao deal. A lot of lifting this coming week if it even gets done,” Rafael said.

The negotiations are set to be still stuck on the HBO-Showtime deal in terms of the replay of the fight, as well as the promotional side. Whether those things can be worked out this week is unclear. It’s possible they can, but there’s also a chance that this could drag out until the following week.

The fight has too much money on the line for Showtime and HBO not to work out their problems. Mayweather obviously wants the fight and he’s likely not going to walk away from the negotiations at this point.

With Mayweather potentially getting $150 million for the fight, maybe more, he’s going to want to try his hardest to get this fight done so he can scoop up that cash and prove to the boxing world that he’s the best fighter in the sport. This is about Mayweather’s legacy, and putting to rest the idea that Pacquiao is in his class.
