Mayweather a 3:1 favorite over Pacquiao

floyd5By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr is favored to defeat Manny Pacquiao if their fight negotiations get completed in time for them to face each other on May 2nd. According to Boada.lv, Mayweather is a 3:1 favorite to beat the 36-year-old Pacquiao.

This isn’t surprising because a lot of boxing writers and fans see Mayweather as too skilled and too light on his feet for Pacquiao to do much with him.

The writers point to the guys that Pacquiao has been matched against since his loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012, with Pacquiao facing Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley and Chris Algieri.

Pacquiao hasn’t fought anyone that they feel is a good fighter. They just see Pacquiao as having been matched up against guys that his Top Rank promoters carefully picked out for him in order for him to halt his losing streak from 2012.

It’s still unknown if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will get done. There are reportedly still significant issues that block the fight, and there is only a short time left to complete the negotiations. The HBO-Showtime impasse is just one of the major hurdles that needs to be overcome for the fight to get signed, but there are also promotional issues as well that could prove to be difficult to get past.

Dan Rafael of ESPN says that HBO made an official comment on the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao negotiations.

”For 1st time in the #Mayweather – Pacquiao talks @HBOboxing has made its only official comment: (more) #boxing,” Rafael said on his twitter. “We are not an impediment to this fight. We stand ready to go. The principals need to agree to terms and come to a deal.” — @HBO boxing.

Just what HBO means when they say they are not an impediment to the negotiations is unclear. Does this mean that they’re asking Showtime to agree to let them only televise the replay of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, or does this mean that they’ve come to an agreement over this issue? Since Showtime isn’t speaking on the issue it’s hard to know for certain what this official comment means.

It would be a real disappointment if the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight doesn’t take place due to HBO and Showtime not coming to an agreement in the negotiations.

If it doesn’t take place now it’s going to be a major disappointment for boxing fans that have gotten their hopes up recently. I think some of these fans won’t bother showing any interest in the fight if they choose to put the fight off until September of this year.
