Martin Murray will rough Golovkin up and beat him, says Fielding

By Scott Gilfoid: #11 WBA super middleweight contender Rocky Fielding, a stablemate of #1 WBC Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs), expects Murray to rough up, out-smart and out-box WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) in their fight this Saturday night on 2/21 at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Fielding is certain that Murray is going to pull off a huge upset in this fight by taking the fight to Golovkin and working him over in a grueling affair. Fielding thinks that unless Golovkin scores a knockout of Murray by the 4th round, we’re going to see Murray take over the fight and cruise to a victory.

“I really think an upset is on the cards this Saturday. They’re working on some good things that could really mess Golovkin up. They’re looking to get in his head,” Fielding said.

When Fielding says “they’re looking to get in his [Golovkin] head,” I wonder if he’s talking about before the fight. I mean, once the fight takes place, it really doesn’t matter what kind of games Murray tries to play to psych Golovkin out, because it’ll be too late for him to work on his mental games.

Believe me, we’ll see Golovkin on a seek and destroy mission at that point, and Murray can give him dirty looks, or talk to him inside the ring, and it won’t matter. I hope Murray doesn’t talk while he’s fighting because he could wind up with a broken jaw if Golovkin nails him with a punch while Murray is in mid yap.

Having seen Murray’s fights against an old and injured Sergio Martinez and a past his best Felix Sturm, I have to say that I don’t see Murray do anything other than possibly making it the full distance in losing a lopsided 12 round decision.

To Murray, I can see him being happy in losing to Golovkin by a 12 round decision, because it would probably be moral victory for him to be the first guy in seven years not to get knocked out by Golovkin. Of course, for Murray to survive all 12 rounds, he’s going to need to go into his clam-shell and just cover up the entire fight like he did in the Sergio Martinez fight.

If Murray decides that he absolutely just wants to keep from getting knocked out, then I can see that possibly happening. But he’ll lose the fight in an embarrassing fashion in losing all 12 rounds of the fight by him not throwing punches and just covering up like a sparring partner.

“Golovkin can hit hard, we know that, but nobody has come back at him yet and roughed him up. They haven’t got physical with him and pushed him about. I think Martin can do that and still stay tight defensively,” Fielding said.

It’s going to be hard for Murray to get physical with Golovkin if he’s going to be looking to “stay tight defensively.” I mean, how in the heck is Murray going to be getting physical if he’s covering up with his high guard just trying to survive the rounds instead of winning them?

If Murray is going to start shoving Golovkin, head-butting and throwing elbows, he’s going to be leaving himself open to getting nailed with head and body shots. For Murray to fight aggressively, he’s going to need to come out of his clam-shell to start fouling. Of course, Murray could also wind up getting disqualified if he fouls too much, because the referee isn’t just going to stand there like a bump on a log while Murray brains Golovkin with elbows and his head.

The referee will likely step in and start taking points of, and if need be, disqualify Murray. That would be a pity for Murray for him to be disqualified because this would be his third time he’s failed in fighting for a world title, and I can’t see him getting too many more chances, if any.
“If Golovkin doesn’t get Martin out of there in four rounds, I think we’re on to a winner,” he said. “But we’re expecting a tough, grueling fight.

I disagree with Fielding. If Golovkin doesn’t get Murray out by the fourth round, I see the fight getting really one-sided with Golovkin giving Murray a terrible beating in rounds five through twelve. At some point, Murray’s trainer is going to need to do the wise thing and throw in the towel in order to save him from taking needless punishment. If the referee doesn’t stop the slaughter in Monaco, then I think Murray’s trainer needs to be prepare to throw in the towel to keep Murray from getting royally pummeled.
