marquez44444By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) is still dealing with knee pain from an injured knee that he hurt nine months ago in his fight against Mike Alvarado in May of 2014.

The fact that Marquez’s knee is still bothering him is troubling, because pain lasting that long could be an indication that there may be something going on inside his knee that might need to be addressed surgically. Marquez reportedly will be seeing a doctor about the problem in Mexico.

Whether the problem has been looked into previously is unclear. If there is something torn in Marquez’s knee, it likely would have been found with an MRI many months ago upon examination.

“I don’t know what will happen in the future. Right now, I have pain in my right knee,” Marquez said via Thaboxingvoice.com.

The knee injury is bad news for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn, who are interested in setting up a fight with Marquez. But if Marquez’s knee is still troubling him at this point, it’s possible that he could miss out on the Brook fight until the knee heals at some point.

If Marquez does need knee surgery, he’s going to likely miss at least six months of action. The longer the delay in surgery, if that’s what Marquez needs, the longer it will take before he gets back in the ring. For Marquez’s sake, you would have to hope that he doesn’t need surgery to repair the problem because that would cause him to be out of action for an extensive amount of time.

If Marquez does come back from the injury then Brook is definitely someone in his sights. That’s if Brook holds onto his IBF title for any length of time to get to a fight against Marquez. One fighter who appears to be at the back of the line for a Marquez fight is Manny Pacquiao, who Marquez has already fought four times.

Marquez feels he has nothing to prove in fighting Pacquiao a 5th time, and even if Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum offers Marquez a better deal than the last time he fought Pacquiao, it’s still unlikely that Marquez will take the fight. He wants to enjoy the lasting memory of his 6th round knockout of Pacquiao in 2012, and he doesn’t want it spoiled potentially with a fight that might go to the cards. Marquez has had rotten luck in his first three fights with Pacquiao in losing two of them and fighting to a draw in another.

Marquez has little to prove in continuing to fight and it might be better off for him to retire. Winning a fourth division world title won’t validate Marquez’s career and make it better than it already is unless he beats someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr. Marquez has already had four fights with Pacquiao with many boxing fans thinking that Marquez won all four of them.

Fighting Pacquiao again won’t do anything for his legacy. For Marquez to get anything that will help his legacy it’s a rematch with Mayweather. Marquez was easily beaten by Mayweather in 2009 in their catch-weight fight. If Marquez beats Kell Brook, some boxing fans will say that he beat a paper champion in fighting who some fans see as the worst of the four world champions after Mayweather, Pacquiao and Keith Thurman.
