Khan: Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Bradley and Marquez are available to fight in May

khan454By Scott Gilfoid: It seems that Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) has widened his net from just focusing on wanting to get big money fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao to wanting to get bouts against the likes of Miguel Cotto, Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez or his next available date in May.

Khan is hoping that one of those fighters will agree to face him. By Khan creating a bigger net to catch one of the bigger stars, he hopes to be able to get at least one of them to agree to fight him. But sadly, I can see all five of them passing on the idea of facing the Showtime fighter.

Other than Mayweather, the other above named fighters are all HBO guys under contract with them. Khan reportedly still has one fight left on Showtime, which pretty much rules out him getting a fight against Pacquiao, Cotto, Marquez and Bradley, who all fight on HBO.

“Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Bradley, Marquez all available to fight around May. I’m ready and want to fight the best #LetsMakeItHappen,” Khan said on his twitter.

I don’t see Khan getting a fight against any of those guys even if he was a free agent in terms of the networks. Khan’s fighting style is too much like that of a guy that looks to spoil by holding, shoving, running, bending his opponent’s heads forward and holding & hitting. With all those things that Khan does, he could be seen as the equivalent of that of a southpaw fighter.

A lot of fighters don’t like to face southpaws because they do everything backwards in the ring. If a guy is used to fighting guys that fight from the orthodox [right-handed] fighting stance, they’re not likely to be comfortable when they get inside the ring with a southpaw.

With Khan being so defensive in his fighting style, it could make him someone that is not high on the list for the big names to fight. I mean, I don’t see Bradley as being a really huge name, but the other guys are definitely big names.

Bradley is just some guy who has been the opponent for the likes of Pacquiao and Marquez in the past. Other than those fights, Bradley hasn’t brought in huge ratings in his other fights against lesser known opposition.

Khan needs to start thinking about setting up a fight with someone soon because May is coming up quick and there’s a good chance that he’s not going to get an interesting opponent if he waits around for too long hoping to get a fight against one of the above mentioned fighters. The last time I checked, Marcos Maidana is still available, and so is Breidis Prescott.

I’m sure Khan could get a fight against one of those two fighters. Prescott knocked Khan out in the 1st round in their fight in 2008, and Maidana would have likely knocked Khan out in their fight in 2010 if not for the referee Joe Cortez constantly breaking up the action after Maidana had Khan hurt in the 10th.
