Khan in position to get big fight if Mayweather-Pacquiao bout doesn’t happen

khan343444By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan could make out well if Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao aren’t able to successfully negotiate their fight for May 2nd. Khan has been yapping incessantly about him deserving to face either of these two big stars if their fight doesn’t take place, and it’s possible – but not likely – that Khan could get either Mayweather or Pacquiao if their negotiations fizzle out.

Khan’s chances of getting the Mayweather fight were increased on Saturday with Mayweather posting the following message on his social media site:

“Laying back, relaxing, and enjoying good weather, palm trees and pina coladas. While they continue to lie about making the fight… I’m just going to continue to travel and explore the world on my private jet.”

Mayweather and Pacquiao appear to be butting heads in their negotiations, and that has got to be interpreted as a good thing for the 28-year-old Khan, because he can slide on in and become the plan-B option for one of these guys. I don’t know that Mayweather will want to face Khan, given that the British fighter likes to run, shove and hold so much, but it’s possible.

If Mayweather is desperate, he might be open to having Khan be his opponent, but I don’t think the fight would bring in many pay-per-view buys. Khan is still too obscure in the United States for a fight between him and Mayweather to be a big deal in PPV.

That’s obviously Khan’s fault because he should have been facing the best welterweights in the division the last three years instead of the middle of the road bunch that he’s been facing instead. Khan has taken zero risks in his match-making in facing little 5’5” Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander.

Those were all safe fights for Khan, and as such, he got nothing in terms of increased popularity for beating them. I mean, I had Diaz beating Khan, so I count that as another loss for Khan rather than a win. He looked awful in that fight in getting dropped and staggered.

The only way Khan gets the Pacquiao fight is if his promoter Bob Arum is willing to work with Khan’s adviser Al Haymon. If not, then you can forget about a Khan-Pacquiao fight. I know that Khan and Pacquiao have been talking about the two of them facing each other, but I think that’s just talk on Pacquiao’s part. I think he’s humoring Khan by telling him he’ll fight him next.
