Khan: I’ll fight Kell Brook by the end of the year

khan200By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is finally interested in facing IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) after saying previously that Brook is unproven and isn’t well-known enough for him to want to fight him. Khan has now seemingly changed his mind about not wanting to mix it up with the 28-year-old Brook.

Khan wants to fight Brook at the end of the year. However, it’s unclear whether the fight can take place because Khan has Ramadan in June that will wipe out any chance of him fighting Brook in a stadium fight during the summer, which is when Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn wants to make the Brook-Khan fight.

Khan is still sitting and waiting to see if he gets a fight against either Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao in May. Both guys are in negotiations, and Khan is hoping to be the backup option for either guy. I don’t know if that’s going to happen if they don’t face each other, but Khan is keeping himself on hold until he finds out what the results are with the negotiations.

“I’m fighting in May, so Kell probably wouldn’t be ready in May but I would love to fight him at the end of the year. It’s a big fight even if it isn’t as big as me against Manny or Floyd,” Khan said via the Mirror.co.uk. “A fight between me and Kell has been talked about for a long time. It would bring a lot of money for him to fight me. But he’s my third choice. You know who the first two are: Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.”

If Khan doesn’t get a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao in May, it’s going to be interesting to see who Khan faces. He says he only wants to fight the best, but he’s been fighting guys like Carlos Molina, Luis Collazo, Julio Diaz and Devon Alexander. If Khan continues to take it easy by facing weak punchers instead of guys that can slug like Marcos Maidana, then you have to assume that he’s just taking it easy until he fights out of he’s ever going to get a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao.

I frankly don’t see Khan ever getting either of those guys, which is why he needs to make sure he fights Brook in 2015 before he gets knocked out again unexpectedly. I mean, no one thought Khan would get knocked out by Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia, but he did.

Khan is in danger of getting knocked out by pretty much anyone that has a little pop in their punches. That’s why it wasn’t surprising that he was put in with non-punchers like Alexander, Collazo, Diaz and Molina in his last four fights.

I doubt that Khan will fight Brook at the end of the year like he’s talking about. I see Khan changing his mind about the Brook fight by next week by going back to him saying that Brook is unproven and doesn’t have the fan base for him to waste time fighting.
