Khan: I’d fight Miguel Cotto at 155 catch-weight

By Scott Gilfoid: With it being increasingly apparent that Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) won’t be getting either Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao in his next fight, Khan is now turning his sights towards WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto for a fight.

Khan says he’d be willing to face the 34-year-old Cotto at a catch-weight of 155 pounds, which would mean that Cotto’s WBC 160 pound title would be on the line for the fight.

“Stylistically Cotto would be a great fight for me,” Khan said on his social media site. ”He’s a great champion. Just imagine that fight in UK.”

Khan hasn’t shown that he can take a punch from a powerful welterweight yet, so it doesn’t make sense for him to be taking a fight at middleweight in a catch-weight of 155 pounds. This would be one of those fights where it’s only worthwhile for Khan to take the fight in a cash out manner with him getting a career high payday in losing.

With Khan moving up in weight to take the fight at 155, he could use that as an excuse if he gets knocked out or out-pointed by Cotto. It wouldn’t be as bad for Khan than it would be if he were to fight someone at welterweight and get beaten.

The only thing good about Khan fighting Cotto is the payday he would receive if he could get that fight. I don’t see Khan being able to take Cotto’s big power shots for 12 rounds without him kissing the canvas and being counted out. Cotto hits harder than Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia, two fighters that both were able to knock Khan into oblivion.

There’s a big problem with Khan trying to get a fight against Cotto and that’s Khan reportedly still under contract with Showtime for one more fight. Khan says he’s not under contract, but there’s talk that he still has one more fight before he’s free and clear. Cotto fights on HBO.

I don’t see Showtime and HBO doing a joint broadcast for a Cotto-Khan fight, because it’s simply not nearly a big enough fight for the two of them to work out a deal. I mean, why would HBO and Showtime want to work out a deal for a fight like Cotto vs. Khan that might not even bring in 100,000 pay-per-view buys?

Khan had been hoping that he would get a big money title shot against Mayweather or Pacquiao, but it’s quite possible that the mega-fight is going to get made. As such, Khan will be left without a dance partner for his May fight.

Cotto hasn’t fought since last year in June when he beat a shot 39-year-old Sergio Martinez, who looked hobbled. Martinez definitely didn’t look good at all in that fight. Cotto had a chance to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but the two of them couldn’t work out a fight.
