By Wilmar Patino (Boxing’s Finest): Now before we jump the gun on crowning Gennady Golovkin as “the next Mike Tyson” lets begin with some of the similarities between them. Of course there are notable differences like the division they fight in, age difference between them in their best years, but as far as being “The Monster” of their respective divisions as Max Kellerman once said about Gennady Golovkin they do have some striking similarities between them when it comes to their aura in Boxing amongst others.

Mike Tyson was a sensational fighter in his hey day scoring what I believe was 17 knockouts in a row as Golovkin goes into this fight with Martin Murray on February 21st with an impressive streak of 18 knockouts. Tyson had the better defense with his bobbing and weaving which was taught to him by the late great Cus D’Mato. Golovkin is a different fighter in that aspect as he is not afraid to get hit with the idea of landing a bomb on the opponent himself.

They also earned these streaks with somewhat similar caliber of opponents. One can argue Gennady Golovkin had the better opponents when strictly speaking on the streaks mentioned above. I remember seeing an interview from Abel Sanchez with him explaining that at the time coming into the Marco Antonio Rubio fight that Gennady Golovkin was CompuBox’s 2nd least hit boxer after Floyd Mayweather Jr. I never looked into how true that was but Abel Sanchez sounded like he was honest and I can see that being possible when it comes to the fear of his opponents wanting to throw with Golovkin.

So in that sense it does remind some Boxing enthusiasts of an early Mike Tyson. We all remember the faces of Tyson’s opponents before the bell rang and seeing utter terror in their eyes. Gennady doesn’t necessarily give off that same aura, but the fear is their after the bell rings and the opponent gets hit with something hard. Both Tyson and Golovkin were aggressive counter punchers for the most part.

Now the similarities end there. I am in no way implying that Gennady Golvkin is a beast the way Tyson was in his early days, but in this generation he tends to remind some people of what it’s like when there is a monster in the division and he strikes fear into his opponents by sheer rep.

Gennady Golovkin still has a long way to go to be considered of legendary status, and has to up the competition after the Martin Murray fight if he gets past him as expected. What he does have going for him surprisingly is the backing of Mexican fans and major networks. He has gained a lot of popularity over the years and I expect him to get into some big fights soon so we can better gauge his skill and level at this point in time in his career.

Martin Murray will offer him a good test. As some believe Martin Murray beat Sergio Martinez back when they fought in Argentina with a slew of paying fans watching. He also has a draw vs Felix Sturm which some also believed he should have gotten the nod. So You may look at him as an undefeated fighter or not. One thing for sure is that he is durable and never has been stopped. It will be interesting to see if Gennady Golovkin can add to his streak by stopping the always game Martin Murray.

So with this I leave the reader to question and debate whether Gennady Golovkin can be this generations Mike Tyson. I like to think of fighters as their own people in the sense that Golovkin should be seen as Golovkin and not Mike Tyson as they are different fighters. For the sake of conversation and fun let us all hear your thoughts.
