Hopkins and Chavez Jr possible opponents for Froch in summer

froch#5By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn has had talks with both Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins for a possible fight against Froch this summer. The 28-year-old former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is the leading candidate to face Froch in the summer.

If that fight doesn’t get made, then Hearn will possibly try and substitute the 50-year-old Hopkins as the opponent for Froch. It’s easy to understand why a fight between Chavez Jr and Froch might not take place due to Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum saying that he’s still under contract with him for one more fight.

So what that means is that even if Hearn is able to negotiate a fight between Froch and Chavez Jr for the summer, it’s still unclear whether Arum will get an injunction to stop it from taking place. That would be a huge buzz-kill on Froch’s part because he’s been bleating on about a fight against Chavez Jr for ages now, as if this fight is something that the boxing public is crying for.

It’s obviously not. The fans want to see Froch fight Gennady Golovkin, but Froch is tone deaf in understanding that this is the fight that fans are most eager in seeing him take.

“Talks continue with the Chavez camp regarding a summer clash in Las Vegas, and discussions have taken place with Golden Boy Promotions regarding a bumper clash in Nottingham with two-weight world champion legend Bernard Hopkins in the summer,” said Hearn via the Dailymail.co.uk.

Hopkins would be an interesting opponent for Froch, because he’s a little quicker than Chavez Jr, and he wouldn’t wind up as a punching bag for Froch like Chavez Jr would be. Froch would have to figure out how to beat Hopkins, because he wouldn’t be able to depend on him fighting foolishly like George Groves and Lucian Bute did in going to the ropes and battling Froch from that vantage point.

Hopkins wouldn’t fight off the ropes, but if he did, he’d be smart enough to keep his guard up to block the incoming shots. He wouldn’t just stand and take shots the way Groves and Bute did. He negative thing about Froch fighting Hopkins is that he would be facing a guy who is coming off of a one-sided loss.

Hopkins was beaten by WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev last November. If Froch were to face Hopkins instead of someone like the unbeaten Golovkin, some boxing fans would think that Froch is just looking for easy payday fights to cushion his retirement.

These fans would see Froch as looking for a golden parachute to help him in his retirement years. These fans would then likely save their money rather than paying to see Froch against an old timer like Hopkins.

Froch’s fight against Chavez Jr could take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, and sell on pay-per-view in the summer, if Arum doesn’t block the fight. This is a fight that motivates Froch, for whatever reason. He’s not motivated for a fight against James DeGale, but he is against Chavez Jr, who hasn’t fought since beating middleweight journeyman Brian Vera last year in March.
