Hearn pushing for Khan vs. Brook in June

khan53By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is in talks with Amir Khan’s management for a fight against Hearn’s fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook for what Hearn hopes will be in June of this year.

Khan recently missed out on a fight against Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, who signed for a fight against each other on May 2nd. It was thought by some boxing fans and writers that Khan had a chance to get a fight against one of them, although I don’t think Khan had any real chance of getting either of them in the ring.

“Just some friendly, initial talks,” Hearn said via ESPN.com. “They are confident the fight will happen this year. I am pushing for it early June.”

Brook has a fight against #1 IBF Jo Jo Dan on March 28th, and Brook will need to get through this fight without getting cut up or injured in order to be able to make a quick turn around and fight Khan in June the way that Hearn wants him to.

The good news is that Jo Jo Dan has no punching power, and he arguably has an inflated ranking.

Khan absolutely needs to take the fight against Brook, because it’s the best chance for Khan to get a good paying fight for the time being. What Khan has been doing recently is taking soft opponents for the past three years and then calling out Mayweather.

The problem is the lack of quality opposition has kept Khan from capturing much of a fan base in the United States.

Even the casual boxing fans haven’t been fooled by Khan with his weak match-making. The only way for Khan – or any fighter – to become popular is for them to take on other popular fighters, and prove that they can beat them in a conclusive manner.

Khan has been trying to get a big money fight against Mayweather and Pacquiao on the cheap by taking on soft opposition that provided no risk to beating him.

Khan is at the point in his career where he needs to either take the fight against Brook, or fight someone else like Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse, Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia if he wants to make a name for himself.

Since Khan doesn’t see all that eager to get inside the ring with that murderer’s row of punchers, Brook might be the best chance Khan has. His back is against the wall right now where he can no longer take on the soft jobs if he wants to get Mayweather and Pacquiao fights. I mean, it’s going to look awfully bad if Khan is matched against another soft job without punching power, and then he immediately calls out Mayweather or Pacquiao afterwards.

In Khan’s last fight, he defeated the light punching Devon Alexander last December. This was a step up fight for Khan from his fights against Luis Collazo, little Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz. Incidentally, Khan’s win over Julio Diaz was highly controversial with Khan getting a victory in the UK. I had Diaz winning that fight, as did a lot of boxing fans.
