floyd6By Suzanne: Boxing is a tough sport and the road to the top is a journey that’s hard fought, quite literally. So you’d expect boxers to be highly paid right?

Well, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was in fact Forbes’ highest earning sports star of 2014. Earning a whopping $105 million from his winnings alone. That means he earns more in one week than Barack Obama earns in one year. A salary that most of us can only dream of.

And Floyd isn’t just the world’s highest earning sports star, he’s the highest earning sports star by quite a margin. He made a staggering $25m more than the next person on the list –soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo – who supplemented his $52m salary with $28m worth of endorsements.

But as we all know, Floyd’s at the top of his game… so what is the average boxers salary like? Well this is where things start to look a little less rosy. The average boxer earns $76K a year. A salary that when compared to the average wage doesn’t look too bad, but when you compare it to the average salary of other professional sports stars boxers look a little hard done by. The average basketball player earns $4.1m a year, football players get $1.4m and even golfers receive $808K. In fact the only major sports stars that don’t earn more than boxers are athletes.

Though when all’s said and done lets not forget… boxing isn’t all about the money. Boxing is an age-old test of endurance. Where strength, speed and reflexes govern the outcome of the fight. There’s nothing sweeter than going through the rounds, boxer-to-boxer, and coming out the end with your hand raised in victory, as the ringside erupts. That being said, who would complain if they earned a Floyd Mayweather’s salary? Not us.
