De La Hoya lectures Mayweather about Pacquiao fight

floyd8282828By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t understand why the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight hasn’t already been made for May 2nd, and De La Hoya sees it as a case of Mayweather not wanting to fight due to De La Hoya thinking he just wants to protect his record.

De La Hoya doesn’t appear to know what’s going on with the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations, so it’s kind of interesting that he’s putting it on Mayweather for holding up the negotiations instead of looking it as a situation where he and Pacquiao simply have reached a sticking point in their negotiations.

There’s also the HBO-Showtime negotiations that are moving at a glacial pace, which Mayweather has no way of speeding up.

“The fight for ‘Canelo’ will be the May 2 or May 9, depends if the fight Mayweather and Pacquiao goes. I cannot understand why this is not done,” De La Hoya said via espndeportes.espn.co.com. “I cannot understand why in my day, at the time of [Julio Cesar] Chavez, we saw the best fighter facing the best. I fight with the best, win or lose. Mayweather will not fight. People will respect you more because you face the toughest, strongest, dangerous, undefeated no matter…what matters is the legacy we’re leaving,”

I think De La Hoya is seeing things as being better than they actually were in the past, because there were a lot of fights that both De La Hoya and Chavez Sr could have made yet they never did. We never saw De La Hoya face the likes of Roy Jones Jr or Joe Calzaghe.

Mayweather tried to fight Pacquiao in 2009, but the fight failed to happen over the blood testing for performance enhancing drugs that Mayweather wanted. I’m not sure how you can put the blame on Mayweather for the fight with Pacquiao not taking place in 2009.

I guess Mayweather could have just said forget it to the random blood testing that he wanted to have for the fight and then it would have been made. But Mayweather obviously felt very strong about the drug testing that he wanted, so it wasn’t reasonable to expect him to have no blood testing to test for these drugs.

Mayweather has faced the best during his career. De La Hoya knows this full well. We just saw Mayweather beat De La Hoya’s flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in an embarrassingly one-sided fight in September of 2013.

Mayweather has also beaten the likes of a prime Jose Luis Castillo, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, Arturo Gatti , Zab Judah and Marcos Maidana.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight can take place, but it’s going to need more time for the negotiation process. Pacquiao is already saying that he believes the fight will be ready to be announced by next week. The fight will be made in time for the fight to be marketed to the boxing public to make it a huge success.

The Canelo vs. James Kirkland fight will be televised on regular non-pay-per-view on HBO the week after the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight on May 9th. It won’t impact the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight in any way in terms of it bringing competition to it.
