David Price: My promoters will get me a world title shot in 2016

price#2By Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBO, #10 IBF heavyweight contender David Price (18-2, 15 KOs) has lost two out of his last five fights, with his only victories coming against weak 3rd tier opposition.

Still, the soon to be 32-year-old Price says that his promoters at Sauerland Events will be getting him a world title shot in 2016. Against who is anyone’s guess? Price, who is still in the rebuilding stage of his career after being knocked out twice by the 40+ year-old Tony Thompson in 2013, is facing an unknown fighter named Irineu Beato Costa Junior (16-2, 14 KOs) in a 10 round bout on February 21st at the O2 World Arena, Kreuzberg, in Berlin, Germany.

It looks like Price’s promoters at Sauerland are going to be matching him against weak opposition until he gets a payday title shot against one of the champions looking to make an optional title defense.

It’s doubtful that Price will work himself into a mandatory position for a title shot, because that would require that Price face an actual contender with halfway decent talent, and I don’t think Price’s promoters will go for that idea. The chances of Price being knocked out again would be too high.

“My promoters Sauerland are going to get me where I want to be, which is a shot at the world title,” Price said via Skysports.com. “It might not be this year but I can see it happening next year, realistically the middle of next year. All I need to do is keep winning, keep improving and keep concentrating on what I am doing in the gym.”

Since being blasted out by Tony Thompson in 2013, Price has beaten the following obscure heavyweights: Yaroslav Zavorotnyi, Ondrej Pala and Istvan Ruzsinszky. Price will soon be adding the little known Beato Costa Junior to this list of obscure opponents. I expect Price to be matched against similar opposition until he eventually gets a world title shot against someone.

What’s interesting is that Price says he’s interested in facing Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. However. Price doesn’t setup his fights, Sauerland does. As such, Price can pretty much pull out any name from his hat in terms of guys he wants to fight, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to fight any of them. It just means he’s name dropping.

I’m surprised Price hasn’t started calling out WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, because that would seem like a guy that Price should be adding to his list because Wilder is well above the likes of Fury and Joshua with his WBC world title.

As for Price getting a world title shot in 2016, I think he’ll get knocked out by all of the current heavyweight champions, even Ruslan Chagaev. I mean, it’s a good thing for Price if he gets a title shot, because he’ll get a good little payday. However, I see Wladimir Klitschko, Deontay Wilder and Ruslan Chagaev knocking Price out fairly quickly. I don’t think Price would make it past the first flurry of punches from Wilder in the 1st or 2nd round.
