Chavez Jr interested in Golovkin fight

chavez50By Dan Ambrose: If former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr gets past his fight against light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara on April 18th, Chavez Jr reportedly is interested in a possible fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Chavez Jr says he wants the fight against WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch fight, because he sees him as being a better fighter than Golovkin and Bernard Hopkins.

“Julio Cesar Chavez Jr says that if Gennady “GGG” Golovkin defeats England’s Martin Murray, and he himself beats Poland’s , Andrzej Fonfara, he wants a meeting with Golovkin´s promoter, Tom Loeffler from K2 promotions, to organize a WAR!” according to the WBCboxing.com site.

One wonders what Chavez Jr wants to talk to Golovkin’s promoter Loeffler about. Chavez Jr had an opportunity to fight Golovkin for big money recently, but instead he chose not to take the fight.

Chavez Jr could have attempted to get a fight against Golovkin in April instead Fonfara, but for some reason Chavez Jr chose him as his opponent instead of the unbeaten Golovkin.

The chances of Chavez Jr and Golovkin fighting are not too good, because if the idea is for Chavez Jr to fight Golovkin after the Froch fight, then that’s not going to happen. If Chavez Jr faces Froch, he’s very likely going to lose to the British fighter in a one-sided fashion similar to how Chavez Jr lost to Sergio Martinez in 2012.

Once Chavez Jr gets dominated by Froch in 2015, then there won’t be any real reason for Chavez Jr and Golovkin to fight each other this year. That’s not to say that a fight between them can’t take place in the future after Chavez Jr rebuilds his career with some solid wins.

A fight between Golovkin and Chavez Jr can definitely take place in the future once Chavez Jr has turned things around, but I wouldn’t expect that to happen too soon. It’s going to take a while for Chavez Jr to pick up enough wins to make boxing fans forget about his loss to Froch. Until that happens, it won’t be interesting for fans to see Golovkin and Chavez face each other.

As bad as Chavez Jr looked in his three last fights against Sergio Martinez and Brian Vera, I think it’s a waste of time to assume that he’ll be able to hang with Froch or Golovkin if those fights wind up getting made. As it is, Chavez Jr is going to have a ton of problems just beating Fonfara, a fighter who is a traditional standup fighter who is extremely easy to hit.

Fonfara is going to give Chavez Jr a ton of problems on April 18th, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Fonfara busts Chavez Jr up and has him badly bruised around the face like Vera and Sergio Martinez did to him. The Chavez Jr-Fonfara is a real 50-50 fight that could very well go the other way in Fonfara’s favor. If Chavez Jr doesn’t win that fight, then there’s really no point in his discussing the possibility of a fight against Golovkin or Froch.
