Canelo will give Golovkin problems, says Rosado

1-IMG_7710By Dan Ambrose: Former Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) knockout victim Gabriel Rosado says from what he saw of Golovkin’s 11th round stoppage win over Martin Murray last Saturday night, Golovkin would have a lot of problems against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs).

Rosado thinks Golovkin lacks defensive skills, as he was hit a lot by the bigger Murray last Saturday. Rosado thinks that Canelo would potentially be able to take advantage of Golovkin’s lack of defensive skills.

Canelo and Golovkin have reportedly sparred each other in the past. There are rumors that Golovkin got the better of the red-headed Canelo. Of course, this is just sparring and not the real thing, but if the rumors are true then it might explain why the 24-year-old Canelo hasn’t been in any hurry to fight Golovkin.

It’s no secret that Golovkin wants to fight Canelo and Miguel Cotto. Golden Boy Promotions can’t make the excuse that Golovkin lacks popularity for why they’re not making that match, because Canelo has recently been matched against Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo, and neither of those guys is as popular as Golovkin.

Additionally, last December, Golden Boy was set to match Canelo against 38-year-old Joshua Clottey, who many boxing fans haven’t heard from since his one-sided loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2010.

“He’s [Golovkin] a good fighter, he’s a smart guy. I think he got a little exposed early in that fight [by Murray]. I can see Canelo giving Triple G problems,” Rosado said via Fighthype. “Triple G doesn’t really have a defense, so he’s there to get hit.”

If Canelo were to commit himself to hitting Golovkin, then he’d leave himself open to getting hit a lot in return, and right now we don’t know how Canelo would do if he were to get hit a lot in a fight. We do know that Mayweather appeared to hurt Canelo at point in their fight in 2013 after catching him against the ropes.

We also know that Austin Trout hurt Canelo with a body shot in the 7th round that caused Canelo to retreat to the ropes and spent the remaining five rounds with his back against the ropes.

Trout can’t punch, so it’s troubling that Canelo had to retreat to the ropes to avoid Trout’s shots. I think Golokin’s power would give Canelo boatloads of trouble to the point where he will likely hide against the ropes, hoping that he can keep from getting knocked out.

The fact that Canelo hasn’t been looking to get a fight against Golovkin despite the two of them both weighing in the low 170s suggests that Canelo doesn’t want to take the fight with Golovkin. Instead of looking to fight Golovkin, Canelo is interested in taking on the smaller Miguel Cotto.

Canelo’s next fight is against ring rusty James Kirkland, who hasn’t fought since 2013m and who is weighing in the neighborhood of 200. Just why Canelo agreed to a fight against Kirkland rather than a fight against Golovkin is unclear, but I’m sure you can draw your own conclusions why he decided to take that fight.
