Arum: Nobody is getting the Mayweather-Pacquiao tickets without paying for them

arum342 - CopyBy Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum laid down the law on Monday in saying that there won’t be any tickets given out for free for the May 2nd fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Arum’s fighter Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Due to the high price of the tickets and the huge fan interest in the fight, tickets are going for a ton. Indeed, the average price of the tickets are said to be over $10,000.

There are some cheap tickets for $1,000, but those tickets are going to be hard to come by for this fight.

The MGM Grand holds only 16,800 fans, so this means that the tickets are being priced very high due to the limited amount of seats for the venue. Arum wanted to stage the fight at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The stadium holds a maximum capacity of 105,000 fans for football related events. Just how many fans the stadium can seat for boxing events is unclear. Pacquiao fought at Cowboys Stadium in March of 2010 and he drew 41,843 fans for his fight against Joshua Clottey.

If Arum had gotten his way, he would have staged the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in this venue, but Mayweather wanted to fight at the MGM Grand. If the fight had taken place at the Cowboys Stadium, they would have been able to attract way more fans than the 16,800 that will be filling the MGM Grand on May 2nd.

You would like to think that the ticket prices would come down if the fight were staged at the Cowboys Stadium, because they would have a tough time filling the venue, but I have a feeling that the tickets would be just as expensive as they are at the MGM Grand.

“The type of calls I’m getting, it’s unbelievable. I could spend the rest of the day on the phone and sell out the entire place,” Arum said via ESPN 1100. “Because of the price of the tickets, MGM, for example, will only give ringside tickets to its customers who have a $250,000 line of credit. Nobody is going to get these tickets without paying for them.”

The high price of the tickets for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight are obviously going to scare away a lot of the common boxing fans, who won’t have the money to dish out a lot of green stuff on tickets. Most people don’t go alone to boxing fans, so if they pay for an additional person, it could get really expensive.
