Adrien Broner: Me and Danny Garcia will clash one day

broner6767By Dan Ambrose: With a dangerous bout ahead of him on March 7th against John Molina Jr, the last thing that former three division world champion Adrien Broner should be doing right now is thinking of facing other opponents in the future, but that’s precisely what he’s doing.

Broner, 25, says he wants to face WBA/WBC light welterweight champion in the future at some point. The problem is Garcia and Broner are going in different directions at this time.

Garcia will be fighting Lamont Peterson in a catch-weight fight at 143 pounds on April 11th, and after that Garcia is expected to move up in weight to welterweight.

“I know me and Danny Garcia will one day Clash heads when the time is Right. I AM A FIGHTER AND TO BE THE BEST YOU HAVE TO FIGHT THE BEST,” Broner said on his Instagram account.

Broner has talked about wanting to fight Manny Pacquiao and Marcos Maidana in the near future. However, the odds of his adviser Al Haymon putting Broner in with either of them are pretty slim. Since Haymon is the adviser for Danny Garcia as well, it’s a doable fight in theory, but not one that will likely take place.

Haymon probably won’t want to risk one of them against each other. A lot of the fights that Haymon puts together have a clear cut favorite. If you look at Broner’s fight against Molina, it’s obvious that Broner is the favorite. Molina has two recent losses to Lucas Matthysse and Humberto Soto, and he’s pretty much limping into this fight after those defeats.

Danny Garcia’s fight against Lamont Peterson is a situation where Garcia is the clear favorite. Peterson was knocked out in just 3 rounds by Matthysse in 2013, so there’s no mystery involved in guessing which fighter will win that bout. Broner vs. Garcia would be too much of a 50-50 fight involving two of Haymon’s A-level fighters. That’s why I don’t see him making the fight until after fans stopping caring about such a match-up.

We’re probably talking about the fight not getting made until one of the two is a shot fighter and in a situation where they’re no longer a threat.

Garcia is likely going to get exposed badly at 147 unless Haymon is very careful with the kind of match-making he does for him. It’s quite likely that Garcia will make a move on the WBA and WBC welterweight titles after Floyd Mayweather Jr retires from boxing.

It’s possible that Garcia can win the titles if he’s faced against a guy that’s not much of a threat to him. But if Garcia gets put in with someone like Kell Brook, Keith Thurman or Manny Pacquiao, he’s going to likely lose and lose badly to those guys.

Even Amir Khan would be problems for Garcia now due to his defensive style of fighting. Khan isn’t the same fighter that Garcia defeated in 2012. He doesn’t leave himself open for big shots like he did back then, and it would be a fight where Garcia would take a lot of punishment to the face.
