Why Mayweather-Cotto 2 not a plausible scenario

mayweather982828By Sizzle JKD: Here’s the thing boxing fans, now that it’s been made public that the Canelo Alvarez vs Miguel Cotto talks are off or perhaps have hit a snag, it now signals more so than ever that the long awaited Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr super-fight are all but a done deal, as many have reported.

Some people believe that just because the Canelo-Cotto talks are off, it makes even it more possible that Floyd will decide to take a step back and avoid Pacquiao in order to fight Cotto. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

First of all, numerous people from Floyd’s camp have said that the ONLY focus for Mayweather is Pacquiao. Sam Watson (Al Haymon’s right hand man), Showtime VP Stephen Espinoza, and even Floyd Mayweather Sr. have all gone out in public to say this.

Anybody who believes in their honest mind that Floyd is going for “Plan B” and will take $90 million less to re-match Cotto only reinforces the notion that Floyd is ducking and dodging Pacquiao yet again. And believe it or not, there are thousands who actually believe that it’s “good news” for Floyd to entertain the fight with Cotto so as not to feel pressured by the current negotiations with Pacquiao. Hogwash. This is the coward’s way out.

Why would Mayweather walk away from negotiations with Pacquiao when Floyd has already promised his fans that he will give his fans what they want? Walking away from Manny and fighting Cotto instead would only further tarnish Floyd’s reputation and at this point in his career, Floyd knows better than to turn his back. Above all, CBS/Showtime and the WBC have all gone out to say that they are removing any potential roadblocks and obstacles to make this fight happen. There is nowhere to go for Floyd but in the direction of Manny Pacquiao.
Here are the main reasons why a Mayweather-Cotto rematch will not happen:

1.) Cotto is with Arum and HBO. Currently, HBO and Showtime are in deep negotiations to make the Pacquiao-Mayweather super-fight. Cotto has been instructed by Arum not to interfere with Plan A. Cotto understands this, and the fact that Cotto has a very close relationship with both Pacquiao and Freddie Roach suggests that Cotto will not do anything to jeopardize the superfight. Which means, Cotto will decline any offer that comes his way from the Mayweather camp.

2.) Do not believe for one second that there is “high interest” for a Mayweather-Cotto clash. Pacquiao-Mayweather would break all PPV records and generate unprecedented box office records. A Floyd-Cotto rematch would be hardpressed to pass the PPV numbers it did in their first fight, especially since a “Floydcott” would be imminent should he face Cotto again. If it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense.

3.) Floyd won a unanimous decision over Cotto in their first match and the only reason Floyd would want a rematch is to win Cotto’s middleweight belt. Here’s the caveat: Floyd has no intention of defending a belt at 160 lbs because Gennady Golovkin would be the fighter that awaits him. Floyd doesn’t want any part of GGG.

4.) Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza said recently in an interview with Sports Illustrated that they “have adopted a strategy of saying as little as possible” and that the less they speak to the media, the better it is for all sides in coming to an agreement. Espinoza also said, “Yes, Floyd is suffering in the P.R. war, but he is sticking to a strategy we all decided is the most likely to result in the fight happening.” We all know Floyd isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to matters related to deciphering legal contracts, marketing plans, etc so he is wise in seeking the guidance of people like Espinoza and Al Haymon to point him in the right direction. And the right direction is to follow the yellow brick road that leads to Manny Pacquiao.

So there you have it. Don’t keep your hopes up for a Cotto-Mayweather bout anytime soon because it’s not happening. Floyd and his representatives reportedly met with Manny Pacquiao and his representatives this week in Los Angeles. Don’t be surprised if the super fight is announced sometime during the week of January 26th.
