Why hasn’t Haymon gotten Khan fights against Mayweather and Pacquiao?

khan777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) signed with adviser Al Haymon thinking he would do a great job of managing his career and getting him the biggest fights.

Unfortunately for Khan, he still hasn’t gotten the big names like Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao and it’s starting to look like Haymon may never be able to get those guys for Khan.

It’s thought by a lot of boxing fans that Haymon doesn’t work with Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, which would make it seem kind of odd that Khan would have Haymon as his manager. If he’s not able to work with Arum, then that pretty much cuts off a lot of interesting fights for Khan, starting with Pacquiao.

Haymon works with Mayweather and that would seem to be a fight that should be a lock for Khan. Unfortunately, Khan hasn’t been able to get the fight against Mayweather, and it’s starting to look like he’ll never face him.

If You look at the guys that Haymon has matched Khan up against – Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander – it seems that Khan hasn’t been put in with anyone special that any other manager couldn’t set up for him.

There’s been no big names for Khan in his last two years, and the quality of guys he’s faced has probably limited his growth and popularity as a fighter. Khan is 28-years-old, and facing the guys he’s been facing is kind of a waste. He’s stuck in a stilted situation where he’s neither rising up nor going downwards. He’s just marking time in the same place he was after his loss to Danny Garcia.

If Haymon isn’t matching Khan against Mayweather or Pacquiao, then how is Khan coming out ahead? He’s facing weak opposition and putting himself in a holding pattern by not fighting the guys he needs to be facing like Kell Brook and Keith Thurman to get to the next level.

If Haymon is never able to match Khan against Mayweather or Pacquiao, he should be able to line Khan up with fights against Brook and Thurman so that once Mayweather and Pacquiao retire, Khan would be poised to take their place at the top of the welterweight division. It’s better that Khan fight those guys now so that he’d be able to take over rather than waiting until the two top stars retire.
