People want the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight but nobody knows, says Jeff M.

floyd677By Chris Williams: While many boxing fans want the mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao to take place in the next few months no one really knows if the fight will take place, says Mayweather’s Uncle Jeff Mayweather.

Like everyone else, Jeff M doesn’t know if the fight will take place, but he does recognize what a monster fight it’ll be if the two sides can negotiate it. The fight is obviously six years too late, but it’s still a great fight because the two guys are close enough near their prime to show what would have happened had they fought each other years ago.

“The whole world heard about it,” Jeff said. “If it was only up for a second it didn’t really mean anything. It just got people riled up and excited about nothing. People still want the fight to happen but nobody really knows.”

There have been so much talk about the fight and the many rumors circulating out there have only confused the fans. The fans want to see the fight, but it’s going to be difficult to put it together with Pacquiao’s management talking about deadlines and counter offers.

It’s like we’re right back where we started from in 2009 with Pacquiao and Mayweather trying to negotiate the fight, and the fight getting yanked out from under us so that Pacquiao can fight one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters in Joshua Clottey.

This fight could probably get put together in a second if Pacquiao’s team agreed to the offers that Mayweather has made. Instead of agreeing, we’ve reportedly heard Pacquiao’s management making counter offers and this has likely slowed the negotiations down.

Mayweather and his management team obviously know what Pacquiao is worth in terms of a purse split. They’ve seen his pay-per-view numbers, his losses to Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley, as well as his fights against lesser names recently in Brandon Rios and Chris Algieri.

When you add all that up it’s next to impossible to give a fighter an even split of the revenue, and that’s likely we’re stuck where we are right now with the negotiations moving slowly. If this was 2009, things would be a lot easier because Mayweather was coming off of a long two year layoff and Pacquiao was fighting regularly and receiving a lot of attention.

The negotiations were done at a 50-50 purse split, and it should have been easy to get the fight signed. Unfortunately it wasn’t. This time though, Pacquiao’s career has taken a downward turn while Mayweather’s is still at the top where he’s been since his ring return in 2009. It’s impossible for him to give Pacquiao a 50-50 deal, and probably impossible to give him a 60-40 split as well.
