Pacquiao to Mayweather: “Sign the contract”

pac72By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao has a message for Floyd Mayweather Jr: “Sign the contract,” in an interview with TMZ. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum says that they’ve agreed to the terms of the mega-fight, which is tentatively scheduled for May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather isn’t ready to sign the contract for the deal because there are items that his management team are still going through. Pacquiao obviously is frustrated by the negotiating process and is letting his feelings known.

Pacquiao’s going to need to stay patient or else tell his promoter Arum to give a little bit more of the revenue to Mayweather if he wants the fight to be signed quickly by Mayweather.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has a potential pot of $120 million that the two fighters will divvy up between them with Mayweather getting 60 percent of the deal. That’s a potential $70 million for the fight. I’m not sure if that’s enough to make Mayweather happy. He might be looking for a bigger split in order to make the fight more worthwhile.

If he’s making $40+ million for his fights against guys like Marcos Maidana, it would seem that he would want to get at least double that amount for a fight against Pacquiao otherwise it just doesn’t make sense. That’s on Mayweather for giving Pacquiao a 60-40 deal, because he could have pushed for a bigger purse split in order to make the fight be worth the risk to him.

For Pacquiao, this is a dream come true for him if he were to get $50 million or more for the fight, because it could take care a lot of any money woes he might have. With that kind of cash, Pacquiao would be getting two fights worth of money to help him out.

It’s expected that Mayweather will sign the contract before the end of the month. However, if it drags on beyond that then you’ve got to expect that Pacquiao and Arum will need to give up a little more cash to get Mayweather to sign on the dotted line. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if that’s actually what happens.

Mayweather will realize that the fight doesn’t make sense unless he’s getting the lion’s share of the cash with a 70-30 purse split, because there are too many other guys out there that he can fight at make good money against. If he’s going to be fighting Pacquiao, it’s got to mean that he’ll be getting a significant chunk of the booty. You can certainly understand it from Mayweather’s perspective, as he’s been making the bigger money lately and bringing in the bigger pay-per-view numbers.
