Pacquiao: If it [Mayweather fight] happens, it will happen. If not, then not

pac746By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao is taking a seemingly carefree attitude about his badly wanted clash against Floyd Mayweather Jr on May 2nd. Pacquiao doesn’t seem worried about whether the fight will take place or not, even though he would stand to make as much as $80 million for the fight.

This is a fight that Pacquiao has been talking and tweeting about for ages now, and it doesn’t seem believable that he doesn’t care whether the fight takes place or not.

“Me and my promoter is no problem. We agreed already about the terms and conditions. Just sign the contract and that fight will be on. If it happens, it will happen. If not, then not. All he needs to do is sign the contract,” Pacquiao said via Fighthype.

I think Pacquiao is feigning non-interest in the fight in order to disguise his true thoughts. He needs the Mayweather fight, because without it his legacy will never be what it could be due to his four fights against Juan Manuel Marquez, who many boxing fans felt won all four of the bouts. Since Pacquiao can’t erase the stain from the losses due to Marquez no longer being interested in facing him at this point in his career, Pacquiao needs a win over Mayweather to help boost his legacy.

Instead of Pacquiao showing a casual attitude about the Mayweather fight, he needs to light a fire under his promoter Bob Arum’s backside to get him to make the fight happen. If it requires for Pacquiao to sign a professional negotiator to the team that can sit in on the contract meetings, then he needs to do that so that he can get the fight made. If nothing else, it will give Pacquiao more insight to what’s happening with the contract deals rather than him hearing about it afterwards through a filter.

We still don’t know what Pacquiao supposedly agreed to in terms of the contract points. Is this something that Pacquiao and Arum came up with that ran counter to what Mayweather asked for? If so, then it’s no wonder why Mayweather isn’t putting pen to paper to sign the contract.

If you’re dealing with the A-side and they put down what they’re looking for in the negotiations, you can’t just come up with your own thing and say it’s agreed on. They need to make the contract meetings public so that the fight fans can see what’s real and what’s not, because right now the only side that’s talking in public is Pacquiao’s side, while Mayweather and his adviser Al Haymon are keeping quiet in a professional manner.
