Pacquiao has no issues with fighting Mayweather on May 2nd

pacquiao7By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao is saying that he’d have no problems facing WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr on May 2nd if that’s the date that he wants to fight on.

It’ll be interesting to know what Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum thinks about Pacquiao being open to facing Mayweather on the Mexican holiday on May 2nd, because Arum recently said that it was a date that should be for Mexican fighters.

Pacquiao might want to sit Arum down and tell him that he has no issues with the Mayweather fight going ahead on May 2nd so that we don’t wind up seeing that fight go down the drain like the one in 2009 and 2012 when Mayweather attempted to get a fight with the Filipino fighter.

When asked if he’d be willing to fight Mayweather on May 2nd, Pacquiao told abnnews.com “Of course, if he wanted on May 2nd. No hassle. It’s beautiful now because we’re talking.”

The fight needs to take place whenever and wherever Mayweather wants it, and that’s something that Arum and Pacquiao are going to need to come to terms with if they want the fight. Mayweather is the A-side in the negotiations, so he kind of can call the shots.

If Arum and Pacquiao want the fight with him then they’ve got to be open to the fight date that he wants. This can’t be giving Mayweather directions when the fight will take place and where. Sure, Arum can try and give Mayweather directions, but it’s not likely to work out well.

Arum needs to let Mayweather have the date, venue and whatever he wants if they want the fight to take place. It’s not going to work if Arum starts talking about a stadium needing to be built before the fight can take place or Pacquiao having some kind of deep cut that’s slowly healing months after a fight.

The excuses will only backfire with the fight not taking place. Mayweather is popular enough to where he won’t lose much if the fight doesn’t take place, but Pacquiao will have a tougher time because he doesn’t have a lot of options right now in terms of big fights.

If Mayweather doesn’t get Pacquiao, he can fight the likes of Amir Khan, Kell Brook and Danny Garcia. If Pacquiao doesn’t get the Mayweather fight then we’ll probably see him in with Jessie Vargas. There’s a big difference between the options Mayweather has and the ones that Pacquiao has right now.
