pac2222By Antonia Bufalino: Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s uncle responds to the suspicions of a Super Bowl announcement for the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao today, via Dontae’s Boxing Nation.

Jeff Mayweather has a close relationship with his nephew and has kept himself tight-lipped when it comes the negotiations. When asked about the rumors of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao having made a commercial together for a Super Bowl announcement, Jeff Mayweather said, “…I can’t say anything [laughing]. On that one, I plead the 5th.”

Two weeks earlier, Floyd Mayweather’s close cousin was asked about the fight by Ellie Seckbach. His response, “Watch the Super Bowl.”

Showtime Executive, Stephen Espinoza, was much more direct when asked if they’d announce it tomorrow. On his twitter, he said, “No.” Bob Arum, Michael Koncz, and Floyd Mayweather himself have recently said the fight is not made yet. According to numerous reports, there are still issues within the Networks(HBO and Showtime) that have to be resolved.

Dan Rafael said on his twitter, “Source involved in #MayweatherPacquiao deal: ‘Nothing is happening before mid next week at the soonest. Not that close on (TV) deal terms.'”

Though a Super Bowl announcement sounds nice, it isn’t as pretty as it seems. A 30 second commercial costs 4.5 million dollars. They could do a press conference which would be easier and much, much cheaper. The Super Bowl might also drown out the announcement even if Mayweather/Pacquiao is bigger than any sporting event today.

If Mayweather and Pacquiao did do a commercial together as rumors say, they would of had to be in the same place, same time. They both were in Miami earlier this week. The two boxers were seen together at the Heat/Bucks basketball game. Some called it planned, while both sides declared it a coincidence.

Is it possible a deal is done, a commercial is set, and they’ve only been playing us the past week(s)? Possible, yes. Probable, absolutely not.

Nobody can be sure though. Sources can tell the media their inside scoops. People involved in negotiations can tell the fans this and that, but the only one holding all the cards is Floyd Mayweather.
