Mayweather: We’re going to make it happen

floyd#3By Chris Williams: Earlier today, Floyd Mayweather Jr expressed optimism that his fight against Manny Pacquiao will get done. Mayweather feels confident the fight will happen despite the number of contract obstacles that still needs to be sorted though. Mayweather is well aware of Pacquiao’s recent talk of their being a deadline at the end of January, but he feels the fight will get made.

Mayweather is amused at the talk of Pacquiao and his promoter having agreed to a finalized deal. Mayweather doesn’t know what they’ve agreed on, because the negotiation process is still ongoing.

“Are we negotiating? Absolutely we are negotiating,” said Mayweather via DJ Whoo Kid on Sirius XM satellite radio as quoted by Rappler.com. “But Pacquiao said that he agreed to everything. What did you agree to? You have no say so. You have a boss. You don’t have no say so. That’s called Top Rank Promotions. It’s not called Pacquiao Promotions. With my company, it’s called Mayweather Promotions.”

This is interesting. If Pacquiao is supposedly agreeing to things, then he’s agreeing to stuff that is being told to him by his promoters at Top Rank. If there isn’t anything solid yet to agree on then you have to wonder what Pacquiao is being told by his promoters.

“Figures make sense. He did get knocked out not too long ago,” Mayweather said in reminding fans about Pacquiao’s knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012. “We’re going to make it happen though. We’re trying, but it’s been extremely difficult dealing with Top Rank. And I don’t want to sit here and point the finger at Pacquiao and say ‘It’s him.’ It’s not Pacquiao, it’s his promoter. A lot of times when Pacquiao says ‘I agreed’ – you don’t have nothing to do with this, you’re not a boss. On a chess board you’re a pawn.”

Mayweather clearly wants the fight, but it seems like he’s struggling with dealing with Pacquiao’s promoters at Top Rank. Mayweather says he feels Pacquiao isn’t the problem. He sees Top Rank as the ones making the negotiation process a difficult one.

If Mayweather feels confident that the Pacquiao fight will wind up getting made then that’s definitely a positive sign that the fight will take place, as long as Mayweather isn’t met with obstacles from Top Rank. He wants the fight, but I’m sure he’s not going to let himself get worked in negotiations by the B-side.
