Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Fool Us Once Shame on Them, Fool Us Twice Shame on Us

pac999By Chester Rivers: Have we once again been duped by these two? The possibility of these two finally meeting in the ring on May 2 has set the boxing world ablaze. Mayweather has stated publicly that he wants a fight with Manny Pacquiao next and Pacquiao has went so far as to make a commercial with Footlocker suggesting that he is waiting for Mayweather to agree to fight. Is this a repeat of 2009? Are we, the fans, merely pawns in their game of chess? Have we been duped again?

Lately we’ve heard rumors that Manny Pacquiao has agreed to Floyd Mayweather Jr. demands and he has already signed the contract. With this much leaked information why haven’t they [Top Rank] leaked copies of the signed contract itself?

It’s one thing to say there is a contract but, it is an entirely different story to present one publicly. Stephen Espinoza of Showtime has stated recently that there isn’t a contract for Mayweather to sign. Meanwhile, Top Rank and Pacquiao has issued a deadline for Mayweather to sign the contract.

Mayweather has remained tight lipped about the entire situation. This is alarming because he [Mayweather] is so public about everything else. Mayweather isn’t shy to post pictures of new purchases, betting slips and check stubs to his social media accounts so why not post a legitimate offer to Manny Pacquiao to one of his social media accounts. Maybe the answer lay within the obvious and that is Mayweather really isn’t interested in this fight.

To add to the confusion industry insiders have already began to leak possible opponents for both fighters. Alex Ariza stated in an interview that Pacquiao will face former T.M.T and current Top Rank fighter Jesse Vargas. Meanwhile, Miguel Cotto’s fight with Saul “Canelo’ Alvarez has fallen apart and his name has emerged as the front runner to face Mayweather on May 2.

The fight game is a lot bigger than two fighters. Boxing is on the cusp of something special if we only would open our eyes to witness. Deontay Wilder, Gennady Golovkin, Danny Garcia, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, Lucas Matthysse, Amir Khan, Mike Perez, Mickey Garcia, Terrence Crawford and many more could be superstars if we stop focusing on two fighters and give the rest of them a chance.

Who is at fault this time? Some will say Manny Pacquiao others will say Floyd Mayweather but, the true instigator could be found in our reflections in the mirror. Yes, I’m saying we are the blame. Without us, the fans, there wouldn’t be a Mayweather or Pacquiao. Without us there wouldn’t be a Top Rank or T.M.T. The next time you want to blame someone for this fight not happening go to your nearest mirror and blame yourself.
