Maidana’s career could improve under Haymon’s safe guidance

maidana8By Dan Ambrose: Welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) could see a continued improvement in his career outlook now that Golden Boy Promotions has settled their legal issues with former CEO Richard Schaefer.

As part of that settlement, Maidana, 31, will be going with Al Haymon, the high powered adviser who many boxers prefer to use to manage their careers. Haymon is good at looking out for his fighters and putting them in winnable fights.

Haymon’s fighters tend to win a high percentage of the time, and obviously the match-making has a lot to do with that. With Haymon’s guidance, Maidana could see his career extended longer than it otherwise would be.

Maidana is fairly simple slugger with a fighting style that works against some guys, but not against pure boxers like Floyd Mayweather Jr and Devon Alexander. Maidana would like to get a big fight against one of the big names like Manny Pacquiao obviously, but he’s going to need to be built back up by Haymon first.

That’s something that Haymon is quite good at. Unless Maidana vetoes Haymon’s choices, we can expect to see him in with the likes of Carlos Molina or Julio Diaz in a tune-up fight or two to get Maidana back winning again.

Maidana lost his last two fights against Mayweather in 2014. He gave Mayweather all he could handle in those fights, but ultimately the movement and the hand speed of Mayweather was simply too much for Maidana.

Depending on how long Maidana wants to sit outside the ring to enjoy the money he got from the two Mayweather fights, we should expect Maidana to be back inside the ring soon. If he doesn’t sit back and just wait idly for a huge money fight to fall into his lap the way some fighters foolishly do, Maidana should be fighting on one of Haymon’s cards in the near future. Maidana would be perfect for one of the NBC cards in March or April that Haymon will be putting on.

That would be an ideal way for Maidana to build up his fan base among the casual boxing fans, because those cards are going to need some exciting fighters. One can hope that Haymon at least finds Maidana a body that will put up a decent fight before folding.

It would be a blow it move by Haymon to set up nothing but mismatches for Maidana and for other fighters on NBC. This is a great opportunity for Haymon to impress the casual boxing fans with some exciting fights instead of stacking the cards with mismatches like we see frequently with promoters of the sport.
