Koncz: Khan an option for Pacquiao, I don’t believe Mayweather will fight us

khan777By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Amir Khan got some good news today with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz saying that Khan is one of the options that they’re looking at for Pacquiao’s next fight in April or May.

Koncz is skeptical about a fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr taking place on May 2nd, so Koncz is already looking at finding a replacement opponent for Pacquiao to fight.

In this case, Koncz likes the idea of Pacquiao fighting Khan next if the Mayweather negotiations don’t work out as he would like.

Koncz, Pacquiao and promoter Bob Arum are trying to put together a deal with Mayweather, but the negotiations aren’t moving quickly enough and it’s possible that the Pacquiao ordered deadline until the end of the month will quickly arrive without Mayweather having signed the contract.

“I truly don’t believe that Floyd is going to step up to the plate and fight us because he doesn’t give two [expletive] about his fans,” Koncz said via RingTV.com. “We’re not going to sit around waiting for him…we’re not going to sit around waiting, so we’re looking at other options, [and] that includes Amir. I’ve spoken to Amir on a couple of occasions, and Golden Boy has talked to him, too, I talked to Amir. We’re not going to sit around with our hands up our [expletive].”

Koncz and Arum will need to work out a deal with both Golden Boy Promotions and Khan’s adviser Al Haymon if they want a fight between him and Pacquiao. I’m sure Golden Boy would be up for a fight between Khan and Pacquiao, because it’s the only huge fight out there for Khan right now other than a bout against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, who Khan has shown little interest in fighting.

Mayweather isn’t going to burn up one of his last remaining fights against Khan, because it’s not a match-up that promises big pay-per-view numbers in the United States. With Khan not interested in Brook, and Mayweather not willing to face Khan and see low pay-per-view numbers as a result, Khan’s best bet for a big fight where he can get retirement money is against Pacquiao. As such, Khan needs to convince his adviser Al Haymon to try and make the fight with Pacquiao.

I mean, I can’t see it happening because I don’t believe Haymon will ever deal with Top Rank in order to make a Khan-Pacquiao fight. I’m sure at this point Haymon already has a master plan for Khan that he wants him to follow in terms of a list of fighters he wants him to face in strategic order.

If Khan tries to break that plan by requesting a fight against Pacquiao, I don’t see Haymon going along with it. Khan would obviously need Haymon’s approval to have the Pacquiao fight take place, and I don’t see Haymon giving Khan the green light for Pacquiao in this life time unless it takes place when/if Pacquiao ever leaves Top Rank. Since I don’t see Pacquiao leaving Top Rank until he’s a totally shot fighter with nothing left in the tank due to age, I don’t see Khan-Pacquiao happening until then.
