Khan back in training

khan111By Scott Gilfoid: After a month off after his victory over former two division world champion Devon Alexander last December, Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is back in training to get ready for his next fight against an opponent still to be determined.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that Khan is trying to keep in condition just in case he gets picked out by Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao for their fights in April or May of 2015.

With the two of them fighting soon, Khan has no other choice but to start training immediately if he wants to be ready for the fight.

”Back in training,” Khan said earlier today on his twitter.

Let’s be honest here; Khan isn’t going to get a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao in early 2015, and likely not at all ever. However, that’s probably not going to keep Khan from playing it safe in order to ensure he doesn’t get knocked out again. So this means that whoever Khan faces next, we’re probably talking about another non-puncher in the same strength level as Devon Alexander, and we’re probably talking about a fringe level opponent at best.

Khan has no interest in fighting for a world title against IBF champion Kell Brook, even though it would make him good cash. If Khan is turning down fights against guys like that then he’s obviously not going to take on a real threat that could beat him like Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter. Those guys would be a nightmare for Khan.

I think even fighters like Diego Chaves and Luis Carlos Abregu would be a grave risk for Khan because those guys can punch. I mean, they’re certainly vulnerable as heck, but they can really punch.

Mayweather is still in negotiations with Pacquiao for a fight in early 2015. If that fight doesn’t happen, it’s still unlikely that Khan will get the Mayweather fight because Khan doesn’t bring anything to the table, according to Mayweather. Khan could change that overnight if he were to face someone like Adrien Broner, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Marcos Maidana or Thurman, and show that he can beat those guys, but I can’t see that happening.

Khan has a win over Maidana from four years ago, but Maidana is so much better now than he was then. Even then, Maidana had Khan on jelly legs from the 10th round while trying to fight past referee Joe Cortez to finish Khan off. It was the weirdest fight I’ve ever seen before, because Maidana was seemingly having to fight his way past Cortez, who was frequently in between him and Khan in the last three rounds while Maidana was trying to finish a badly hurt Khan. It reminded me of a schoolyard fight where one kid is trying to get past the teacher to put the coup de grace on a beaten foe.
