Is Froch starting to show interest in Golovkin fight?

froch9993By Scott Gilfoid: Last night, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya sent out a tweet to Carl Froch among others saying that he’s spotted flaws in the highly popular knockout artist Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) that he thinks Froch can take advantage of if he faces him.

What’s interesting about this is that Froch chose to retweet De La Hoya’s comment on Golovkin. Now why would Froch make a move like this?

My guess is he’s starting to realize that the hard-hitting Golovkin, who is taking America by storm with his impressive knockout victories, might be Froch’s only shot at getting an opponent to fight under the lights in Las Vegas, Nevada in early 2015.

Froch’s preferred opponent, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, has promotional issues with Top Rank right now, and it looks as if it’s going to take some time for him to work out the problems with them. Until then, it’s highly unlikely that Chavez Jr will be able to take the fight with Froch no matter how much he wants the fight.

”@gggboxing @Carl_Froch love that fight, I saw a major flaw in GGG that Froch can exploit,” De La Hoya said on his Twitter.

I think the flaw that De La Hoya is talking about with Golovkin is his problems in fighting while moving backwards. De La Hoya recently mentioned this in an interview where he said that Golovkin doesn’t fight well when he’s backed up by his opponents.

The problem with that is there’s been so few occasions where anyone has backed Golovkin up. If that’s De La Hoya’s strategy for Froch beating Golovkin, I think he might be mistaken because if Golovkin stands his ground under Froch’s attacks, we’re going to see Froch getting nailed by some mammoth shots that I doubt he’ll be able to handle.

Froch was quoted in the past by HBO as not sounding particularly interested in getting in the ring with the talented Golovkin, or at least that’s how I would interpret the following quote:

“Just swerve Golovkin like the plague. He punches like a mule. I don’t need to be in with him. Dangerous fight.”

Oh man, this is really disappointing to read this from Froch. So, Froch is saying that Golovkin should be swerved and that he doesn’t need to be in with him because it’s a dangerous fight. That sounds like a comment that a ducker would make, doesn’t it?

I’d hate to think that Froch would swerve around a puncher like Golovkin because he’s dangerous and that he punches like a mule. What kind of legacy will Froch have if he’s avoiding the best in order to face someone who hasn’t fought in almost two years and who is so incredibly easy to hit it’s not even funny.

The fact that Froch re-tweeted De La Hoya’s tweet could suggest that his comment about Golovkin being flawed might be giving Froch some confidence to finally face the Kazakhstan fighter. To be sure, Golovkin has already said that he’d be willing to fight Froch in either the UK or Vegas. Golovkin doesn’t care because he obviously fancies his chances of beating the 37-year-old Froch.
