Hearn says Golovkin, Hopkins and Kessler are potential opponents for Froch

froch563478By Scott Gilfoid: After sitting idle for the last eight months without fighting anyone, IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) said he would still sit and wait on a fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a bout that Froch is hoping can take place as early as the summer.

Chavez Jr is fighting on April 18th against Andrzej Fonfara and there are major questions whether the fight will take place or not, because his old promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank intends on getting an injunction to halt the fight from going forward because he says Chavez Jr still owes him one more fight on his contract with his company.

In the meantime, Froch said recently that he’ll wait for Chavez Jr to get freed up before he fights again. He’s not interested in facing Bernard Hopkins or Gennady Golovkin, two fighters that the boxing public appear to be much more interested in seeing Froch fight rather than Chavez Jr.

What’s surprising now is that Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn is saying that Golovkin, Hopkins and even the inactive Mikkel Kessler are all options for Froch. This makes one wonder whether Hearn has checked it out with Froch before speaking about these guys, because Froch clearly said that he has no interest in fighting Golovkin or Hopkins.

Whether that’s the case for Kessler is unclear. That would be kind of sad though if Froch were to agree to fight Kessler because he beat the Danish fighter in May of 2013, and Kessler hasn’t fought since then. By the time Froch were to face Kessler again, it would be over 2 years since Kessler last fought. That’s even worse than Froch fighting Chavez Jr, who hasn’t fought in over a year.

“There is Bernard Hopkins, Gennady Golovkin (against Froch) is a fight that everybody would love to see, Mikkel Kessler potentially and, of course, James DeGale is the mandatory challenger for Carl Froch,” Hearn said to Skysports.com. “We will try to reschedule the (Julio Cesar Chavez Jr) fight for the summer now and other names have also come into the hat. I think Carl Froch will fight. He needs something that is going to make him get up at six o’clock in the morning.”

What’s up with this ‘Froch needs something to get him up in the morning at six o’clock’ stuff? The way Hearn talks you’d think Froch is 80-years-old or something. I never got the impression that Froch was a lazy person, but with the way that Hearn describes him, he sure makes him sound like he lacks motivation and ambition in his life.

I don’t think for a second that Froch will agree to fight DeGale, Golovkin or Hopkins. I mean, Froch already said he’s not interested in fighting all three of those guys. Why would he suddenly change his mind after all this time? I see Froch having to be dragged into the ring kicking and screaming if he were to be matched against Golovkin or Hopkins.

I think Kessler and Chavez Jr are the only options, and that’s only because neither of them are difficult. Kessler fought like he was afraid to throw shots the last time he fought Froch, and the fight turned out to be one big bore. Chavez Jr is a slow fighter who takes punishment, and he’s not fought in ages since his fight against Vera in early 2014.
