Golovkin willing to wait for fights against Cotto or Canelo if he has to

golovkin99999By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is willing to sit and wait to get a shot against Miguel Cotto, the WBC middleweight champion, or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Golovkin may have to wait an awfully long time to get a fight against one or both of them if the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight winds up vacating their WBC title rather than facing Golovkin.

“Absolutely, I’ll wait,” Golovkin said. “He’s a great champion. It’s biggest fight for me. Cotto or Canelo, doesn’t matter. This is a big pay-per-view fight for me. Right now, Miguel Cotto, he’s WBC champion. It’s a very important fight for us.”

If the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight chooses not to honor the World Boxing Council’s wishes for them to fight Golovkin, then we’ll likely see the winner of that fight vacating the WBC title before the WBC steps in and strips them of it.

From there, you can expect to see them move back down to junior middleweight where the waters are a little safer in terms of punchers. That doesn’t mean that Cotto or Canelo would have an easy time if they were to face the best guys like Erislandy Lara or Demetrius Andrade, because those would be tough fights for them. We already saw how poorly Canelo looked in his recent fight against Lara. It’s safe to say that Canelo will never face Lara again.

If Cotto and Canelo move down in weight to junior middleweight then Golovkin will very likely never get a shot at fighting either of them no matter how long he waits for the fight.

Cotto is likely going to be retiring in the near future, and until then he’s going to be looking to take the biggest fights possible against guys that guarantee him a huge payday. That means Canelo, Mayweather and possibly Manny Pacquiao if he’s willing to move up in weight and face him at 154.

As for Golovkin, he’ll likely need to be content with fighting for the WBC middleweight title when it comes vacant against the next highest ranked fighter, which in this case would be David Lemieux.

It would still be a great fight for Golovkin, because Lemieux is a powerful puncher and an exciting fighter. However, he doesn’t have the same name as Canelo or Cotto, so it’s not a fight that will bring Golovkin the same kind of attention or even close to the same kind of attention from the boxing fans.
