David Price to fight on Abraham-Smith II undercard on February 21st in Berlin, Germany

price1234By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight David Price (18-2, 15 KOs) will be returning to the ring next month on February 21st on the undercard of the rematch between WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham and contender Paul Smith at the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany.

Price, who is starting to get up there in age at 31, hasn’t fought since June of 2014 when he beat 2nd tier fighter Yaroslav Zavorotnyi by a 10 round unanimous decision.

Price doesn’t have an opponent yet for his fight next month, but you would have to guess that it’ll be someone along the same lines as the guys he’s been facing. In other words, you can expect another 2nd tier guy. Price’s promoters at Sauerland are trying to rebuild his career after his back to back losses to 40+ year old Tony Thompson in 2013.

Price has since won his last three fights, but against weak opposition that have told us nothing about whether he’s improving or not.

‘’I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring and reminding everyone what I’m all about,” Price said. “2015 is going to be a big year for me. It’s important I get off to a good start on February 21.’’

It’s unclear what precisely Price means by saying it’s going to be a “big year” for him. If he means he’s going to be facing more of the same type of opposition that he’s been facing, then I think he needs to revise his comments to make it clear to the boxing fans that it’ll remain the status quo. But if he’s going to step it up against some live bodies, then that’s definitely a good thing.

At this point I would happy to see him fight some middle of the road heavyweights like Manuel Charr, Lucas Browne, Vyacheslav Glazkov, Odlanier Solis and Carlos Takam. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening, because all of those guys would have a decent if not great chance of beating Price. Price at least needs to be facing those type of contenders at this point in his career if he wants to improve, and if he wants to show that he’s got the skills to be a world champion some day.

Price can’t keep getting matched against weak 2nd and 3rd tier guys, because he’s already 31 and about to turn 32. I mean, how much longer is it going to take before Sauerland takes the training wheels off of Price and puts him in with solid heavyweights? I see this as a failure to launch and it’s just a waste of his career.

It’s better that Price finds out now that he doesn’t have the talent to fight at the upper level rather than wasting 4-5 years of his career fighting god awful opposition before finding out that he doesn’t have what it takes. At least if he found out now, he could save himself the punishment he takes in training and in his fights, and start looking in another direction in terms of his career.
